jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

sweetdream:

Welcome week is just a week of a bunch of things. There is the club fair also. Check online fo rthe schedule and choose which days you would like to attend. Once you have your ucinetid and such try to login to student parking services and order a parking pass asap. I don't think you can buy any other type but standard for freshman commuters. If you get it soon you don't have to pay for parking during welcome week.

I got a 4 in calc ab and a 3 in calc bc. Can I still take math 2A or I have to take math 2B? I plan to go to Pharm D and the pharmacy schools require that I take math 2A and 2B.

confident:

You can retake math 2A if you like. However, it will not count. You are cleared to register up to math 2B only. Pharmacy schools require both, but you are already cleared for math 2A. There is no need to take it again.

Thanks, Jason.

what's the difference between Math 2 A and B?

i know both are calculus classes..

is it that B is just harder than A? kinda similar to how there are AP calc AB and BC?

corporateflea:

Calc AB and Calc BC should be equivalent to Math 2A and Math 2B respectively. Do you want to know what material they cover at UCI? I can link you to some past websites.

My Admission Summary has been changed from Undecided/Undeclared School of Social Sciences to Undecided/Undeclared Division of Undergraduate Education. What is it? Does it mean I will have more choices when I declare major?

UCI Lover:

Sorry, I'm not sure what it means. However, my best guess is that this means youare undeclared/undecided under no school at all. You used to be under the School of Social Sciences though. Under either school you have all the choices you want when it comes to switching major. However being under teh school of social sciences would help you get into a social science major more immediately.

Yea I think A only goes up to derivatives and uses, B is integrals etc.
I might be wrong though

i see... i thought AP calc AB also does integral too...didn't it? shrugs..

anyways

do i have to buy textbooks from uci?

if not....

anyone know which book they use for these classes?

bio 93 and 94
chem 1a
math 2b

would appreciate it if you guys can tell me what they use for these...

Hey guys,
hope everyone is doing well.
Haven't had the chance to post here lately because I've been sick and my job has been keeping me busy, but seems as though the thread has expanded quite a bit.

Just got my placement test results, not good at all. I placed in Chemstry 1A and Physics 7A, I can't believe it. How is Chemistry 1A? Any professors recommended for it? I plan to take it in the fall along with Bio 93 since I am now certain I want to do pre-med.

Also, I notice some major talk going around, is there such a thing as an "easy" major? I'm really not sure what I want to do as yet, but I sort of have an inkling towards criminology, but I've heard its very hard.

I'm going to go to spop next week, and I believe we get to register for classes (kinda nervous). Lets say you decide you change your mind after you go to orientation and you want to add/drop a class, do you still have an option of changing your mind before the quarter starts?
I have to take university studies (since I'm undeclared), and I really want to do pre-med, so the way I've calculated it, I'm going to be doing 5 classes:
Math 2B(i'm taking 2A at a cc near by, I hope I'll be ready for it, any good professors?)
Chemistry 1A (BTW, how's the chem dept at the school?)
University Studies
Writing 39B
Bio Sci 93

My dad is really on my case about taking too many classes my first quarter, what do you guys think, is this a bit too much? Is it possible to just take Writing 39B in the winter, also is it impossible like I've heard humcore is?

One more thing, I have no choice other than commuting (I live in the Placentia area), is it impossible to do it on a daily basis, do you guys know people commuting from that area? I'm too young to be placed on the carpool list lol

Sorry about bombarding you guys with questions, it just seems like I've been slacking off on this whole class stuff for awhile...

Thanks for all the help!

cal90: youre taking too many classes. thats 16+ units. and, if i were you, i wouldnt be too excited about taking university studies...sounds like a waste of time.

Hey cal90

I’ll try to make this post short and sweet.

-Your placement tests are good. Chem1A is as far as you can go. You could’ve placed into Physics 7B though. It doesn’t matter, you’re on the right track. G-chem (the chem 1x series) is known to be generally tough. It’s also considered a weeder course alongside ochem.

-There are many majors that have a much easier load than others. Criminology at UCI is ranked 4th in the nation. It may be very competitive. As for the workload, I’m not sure.

-You will be able to add/drop classes online all the way until 2 weeks into the quarter. After that, it must be done by add/drop cards.

-Uni Studies is definitely a waste of time.

-You’re taking a huge load of classes, especially with writing 39b and chem. I suggest lightening up if you do not feel ready for the college life. If you make a wrong judgment, you can jeopardize your grades.

-Writing 39B can be taken during any quarter. Humcore runs in a series that is offered in sequence in each quarter. It’s not like the WR30 series.

-commuting will be a *****. My roommate next year lives there. Commuting will truly be a hassle. It might take one hour or a bit more to get to UCI in traffic. Be careful with the 73/55 intersection. I suggest you use MacArthur Blvd to avoid that. Experimenting with local roads may help. Traffic sucks.

"Traffic sucks."

More like Irvine police being pain in the a$$ :D

I'd drive very carefully around irvine if I were you. Take note.

Hey guys,
Thanks again for the helpful responses.
Unfortunately, I'm required to take university studies since I'm an undeclared/undecided major.

Yeah, right now, I think I'm just going to let go of 39B Writing.

You mentioned MacArthur Blvd...is that an exit off of the 55 freeway? Or do you recommend taking the roads to get to that street as it leads to UCI?

Also, never knew the police was a pain at Irvine, I heard most people do 50-60 on the roads and its acceptable.

Where do we opt out of the health insurance thing, and how much does it save us?

Log into your ZotAccount.

https://sbs.adcom.uci.edu/ZotAccount/

It saves you 250 a quarter.

Would you recommend I take freshmen seminars? I am going to take Humanities Core 1A and Math 2A in the fall quarter.

Cool, so $1000 off. :p

Also, I heard from someone going to UCSD that if you pay tuition and housing in full at one time, you get a discount. Is that true?

Another thing - where do we find out what we need for our classes, like books and whatnot?

staplers:

Freshman seminars take out elective credits you need to A)gain standings for registration windows or B)graduate. They are normally useless, unless they are topic specific ones that interest you.

WPM_Jon:

I've never heard of any discount. Go to book.uci.edu and look under coursebooks. It's not posted but it will be posted in time.
