jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

The post with the link to the change of majors (<a href="http://www.due.uci.edu/changemajor/%5B/url%5D">http://www.due.uci.edu/changemajor/</a>) doesn't have any information on changing into Business. How does it work changing your major to the one at the Paul Merage School of Business?

Does anyone know about what i have to do to appeal to uci?

actvsceneiii:

The Paul Merage School of Business is a graduate school. There are no majors offered under them, only minors. The only program offered is the 3-2 major which I believe has something to do with doubling in management. You have to be extremely competitive to partake in it. I say you need a 3.5 minimum and a 3.7 is recommended. For engineers, there is extra pressure since it's too difficult to double major with the engineering curriculum. I think there's a 3.7 requirement for engineers.

Your question is too general, google it up. There's a website explaining it somewhere, and the link can be found somewhere in this forum.

hey jason, i read that you went through the appeal process. was this process long and hard? or was it just like writing another personal statement?

also, what do they mean by "the applicant must show evidence of academic information that was not present on the application (information that clearly shows the student to have a stronger academic record than had been earlier evidenced)"?

I have a question about housing... I sent in my SIR and housing application already, but didn't get to choose between MC or ME. Is there another application that is coming my way where I get to choose? And do I get more priority since I sent in my application earlier?

perfect question for you jas0n, hopefully you can help me out

What is the difference between
Computer Science and Engineering (Engr) -- Henry Samueli School of Engineering
and
Computer Science and Engineering (ICS) -- Donald Bren School of Computer Informations

Which one do you recommend? Can you give me a brief intro to ICS and ENGR? What's the difference?

I was accepted into ENGR but I was looking at the ICS site and what appealed to me was the hands on activities, design, actual work with computers and life

Xx123xx:

The appeals process is not exactly long and hard. You need to use it to basically correct or add onto your application. Another ?better? personal statement won?t do anything for you. In fact the personal statements probably gave most people no points towards admissions. My tip is to look at the admissions criteria and try to squeeze anything about yourself that can give you points in the specified areas.

The evidence is basically stuff like if you forgot to add a community college class you need to tell them about it and show a transcript as evidence. Or you can use a medical statement to prove you went through ?hardships? during your high school years.

Actvsceneiii:

There will be another application later. More info can be found somewhere in the recent posts of the forum. You can just wait and see though.

ND6:

Finally, a more meaty question. I?m actually going to rush this entry since I have class in a bit. CSE is compsci with engineering so you?ll be required to go higher in math and actually take physics. I think you also dip into more hardware classes in the EECS department. CSE is going to be a little more challenging since it requires more out of you. ICS is very concentrated in computer science. Classes listed CSE and ICS are basically the exact same classes so you will see them listed twice on WebSOC (schedule of classes). You?ll be doing the designing and working with computers deal in both majors but I believe you get to actually touch some circuits in CSE. I saw a similar class that I?ll be taking as an EE major. Here are three sites that can give you a lot of insight.

CSE sample:
<a href="http://undergraduate.eng.uci.edu/degreeprograms/compsci/2006-2007/requirements%5B/url%5D">http://undergraduate.eng.uci.edu/degreeprograms/compsci/2006-2007/requirements</a></p>

ICS sample:
<a href="http://www.ics.uci.edu/ugrad/degrees/index.php?track=ics&year=01%5B/url%5D">http://www.ics.uci.edu/ugrad/degrees/index.php?track=ics&year=01</a></p>

catalogue:
<a href="http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/%5B/url%5D">http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/</a></p>

Ahhhh I accidently read your post wrong. I thought you meant CS vs CSE. CSE in both departments are the same. They are joint offered by both schools. ICS is a separate school that has Donald Bren's name on it and is more aimed towards pure computer science. This information may be useful to you anyway. Also, ICS is a major concentrated in pure programming. It has a lot less requirements, and you?ll be seeing those students in the same classes anyway.

thanks jason!

Is changing to Computer Science major hard at UCI? I heard it's quite hard at Davis to change.

Is it easy to get the classes and schedule you want at UCI? How difficult is it to graduate in 4 years, and just in general.. about how much harder are the engineering classes in comparison with highschool AP/honors courses?

I've heard that in Calpoly, both grad requirements and class avalibility make it difficult to graduate in 4 years. In fact, statistics say on-time graduation at cal poly is 20-something percent while Irvine boasts over double that amount. It's the main reason I'm sort of reconsidering Irvine as my main choice
thanks

Our child is graduating in four years, and could have graduated a few quarters early. She wasn't an engineering major, though.

I went to UCI today.. and took a tour of Mesa Court.. I liked it.. but the phase we went to smelt like a hospital lolz.. is there one that you suggest I should ask for (thats better).. i dont really care which theme i get into??

Mysticorion: If you?re already in an impacted major, changing major by petitioning over the summer may be likely. Otherwise look up what the requirements are to change your major. Normally for CS and engineering the required classes and GPA is more. The website is here:

<a href="http://www.due.uci.edu/changemajor/%5B/url%5D">http://www.due.uci.edu/changemajor/</a></p>

Once again, changing major is very possible. IMO I think it's very easy.

Vc89:

As a freshman you may have a hard time getting into the classes that are wanted by upper classmen. Classes such as bio, chem, and physics are made for mostly freshman so you?ll easily get into those classes but maybe not at a preferred time. Graduating in 4 years depends on you. If you follow your sample schedule you can easily graduate in 4 years. Umm college classes are structured completely different from every AP/honors course. Honestly I look back and see high school as a very easy time when there was no stress and such haha. AP classes do prepare you for the college life but they do not necessarily mimic a college course. The reason why engineering is particularly harder than other majors is the extra required courses and the abstractness of the subject. It's not straight forward memorizing. I can elaborate if you want.

Being at a UC, you are given a lot more resources as opposed to a CSU. UCI boasting over double that amount is very normal. There are also a lot of over achievers in the UC system so you?ll see people leaving within 2-3 years. If anything summer classes will always keep you on track.

Selina:

I think the themes are juggled around the entire dorm complex. I could be wrong though since I?ve heard last year?s theme for my dorm was also the same. I think if you get into academic excellence, you?ll get one of the newer halls.

should a first-year get a single, double, or triple? will the "dorming experience" be affected if i get a single?

janonymous:

You won't be experiencing the life of having a roommate and making a new friend. Sometimes roommates can be the worst thing in your life but it normally is either interesting or a great experience. You'll still be living next door to a lot of people if you live in a single so I say it won't ruin your experience at all.

Computer Science:
Must meet ONE of the following sets of requirements:

* UC GPA of 3.10 or higher and 3.20 average GPA in ICS 21 and ICS 6A/Math 6A
* UC GPA of 3.00 or higher and 3.10 average GPA in ICS 21, 22, and ICS 6A/Math 6A
* UC GPA of 2.80 or higher and 2.80 average GPA in ICS 21, 22, 23, and ICS 6A/Math 6A

Is it hard to get a 3.1 GPA at UCI?

jas0n,
I have a question regarding admissions for you. On my UC app I put that I planned to take US Government AP exam however I didnt sign up for it. Would UCI rescind if i didnt take the exam. btw i am not prepared for it so my score would probably be lower than a 3

Mysticorion:

Getting a 3.1 depends on how prepared you are for college. I say it's easy. Most of the time classes are curved so let's just say only 17% of the students get As in each curved class (some are not curved). That means only 70ish students will get As out of a class of 400.

persianversion:

All you have to do is notify UCI you will not be taking it. They will not revoke your admissions for a small thing like this. Also, AP scores have NO effect on admissions.
