jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

i think i have my spop at the 14th to 15th of July, do you think taht UCI will have ap test scores in their records by then.

I honestly don't know. It has been awhile since I've taken an AP test, haha. Check CB's website.

yeah, they should.

what GPA must you get to be the top 5% of your graduating class? 10%?

3.74? 3.84? 3.94?!

corporateflea:

It totally depends on the program/major you are in. For example, the average GPA for an engineer versus a student in the school of biosci will be different. For engineering, I'd say you need about a 3.5 gpa to be in the top 8% of the class. I'm not entirely sure though!

i'm in the school of biosci

The cutoff for latin honors in biosci for the graduating class was about a 3.66 and higher. You need like a 3.85 for magna. Keep working hard!

hi again! thank you for the help.
i have spop this coming week and we have to chose between hum core or taking the writing 39 series. which one would you recommend? i heard that hum core is pretty intense but it takes care of breadth classes. I took english honors and english AP lit during high school. which one is easier/the better series to take

Hey!

Just wondering if you know anything about the International Studies Major and Arroyo Vista living. I tried for Kaleidoscope House and IPACS house and I hope I get into either one!

How far is it from campus? The main reason I applied there is because of the access to the kitchen/ it's more apartmenty sounding because of my strict food diets.

Anything else I need to know about AV?

fabulousxp:

All I can really say is if you are up for the challenge and want to get rid of GE requirements, take the humcore series. If not, take the writing 39 series. I took the writing 39 series because my writing skills are a bit lacking, and I'm an engineer so fitting it into my freshman schedule would've been harsh. As you guessed by now the writing 39 series is the easier one. Which one is better? It's up to you to decide that.

International Studies is a very broad major consisting of many courses from a lot of social science departments on campus. It's particularly linked to anthropology. I would look up the courses and course descriptions on the UCI catalogue. Look up both International Studies and Anthropology. It's one of the easiest majors on campus by the way.

AV is just as far as VDC and the ARC is from campus. It'll take a very long time to walk, but biking is manageable. You'll take a bus to school every day. I've never seen AV particularly but you are correct that it is more apartmenty. However, there are kitches in the dorms too! All I can say is, without a car, it may be a struggle to walk back and forth from Albertsons. Albertsons is down the street btw. Check the website for more information. I don't have anything off the top of my head that you should know. You can ask me other questions about it though.

btw don't take hum core.

don't. you'll regret it.

jas0n where do u find out statistics about latin honors?

Thank you so much for answering my questions!

I am bringing a car and a bike (I'm also a walking fanatic, so I think I'd enjoy the walks to and fro). I'm glad it's close to the ARC too!!

Why is international studies so easy? I'm glad to see that it's a broad major because I like studying everything and anthropology is very interesting too.

What's the workload for that major that makes it particularly easy? Is it a popular major?

chickenboi8008:

I got the biosci stats from a biosci graduate. As for the engineering one, I'm basing it off of some knowledge known from ESC/honors societies.

kaii:

It's a somewhat popular major. It's also a fallback major like economics/bizecon. It's particularly easy because the classes haven't gotten a reputation for being rigorous. However, I would not underestimate any program at all.

hello! i was wondering whether or not you can sell textbooks back to the UCI bookstore at the end of the quarter/year if you buy from them... thanks! =D

yeah you can, but you'd get more money by selling it to another student.

you can sell books on sites like half.com too. Thats what i've done before, its really easy.

hey jas0n, if i didn't pass the awpe writing test then i can either enroll in writing 37 or 39a right? what are the differences. i think writing 37 includes 39a and 39b right?

2 questions:
how exactly does the meal plan work (at the residence halls)? i've heard that each "block meal" means you go in for 1 meal and take all you can eat. is that true? (if it is, i am definitely getting fat)

and how is the internet in the dorms? is there wireless? is it fast?

u get 100, 120, or 165 meals i believe and it is buffet style. so yes, all you can eat. food isn't that great though. Some people gain weight. I didn't.

internet is fast and wired. You have to bring your own wireless router or use a friend's wireless if you want wifi. My hall had like 2-3 people bring wireless though.
