Okay, so... Is being in an Honors Progam at a jc really going to help you stand out during the admissions process?

Would say a 3.3-3.5 of an honors student look better than a 4.0 of a regular student? I'm assuming the honors classes are more or less the same as the regular classes since a lot of the teachers are shared.

Were any of you UCLA or Berkeley people NOT in an honors program?

My jc has an honors program, but i'll be half way done with my course work before fall, so i felt like applying to the honors program would slow me down since they only offer like 6 honors classes a semester (most of which i had already taken).

PS: I hope no one feels i am taking advantage of this board. I just discovered it a few days ago and have SO MANY questions!

Their program seems legit enough. If you would be able to complete the program while maintaining a good GPA (Which I would consider within .2-.3 points than if you didn’t do honors), then you should.

Priority consideration for admission is given only to students who complete the program…which would mean i’d have to re-take (i don’t know if they’d let me) at least 2 classes since i’ll be done with GE’s next semester.

I’m hoping to start applying for schools this November (hopefully…i need to speak with a counselor), and i’m already enrolled in 17 units for the fall, so if i were to join the honors program it would have to be during spring…and those grades will not even be considered from what i understand.

Basically my main question is if any of you future Bears (because my heart really is set on Berkeley) have been accepted WITHOUT being in an honors program?

I’m taking four honors classes this Spring. Of course they will take them in consideration; I need to complete them to have that seal on my transcript & for UCLA TAP.

They won’t let you re-take those classes. ;/ Especially with all these budget cuts.

On another note, my cousin is at Cal, senior this upcoming fall. She transferred without Honors. Psychology major but had over the top ECs.

Psychology is one of the most impacted majors across almost all the UCs. Especially Cal and UCLA.

Given your situation, I think it’s too late in the game to consider honors program at this time for TAP/TAG purposes. You do NOT need to complete all six honors courses by the time you apply for transfer in Nov. (At least at my CC, but I think this applies to all); you just need to finish all six by the Spring term prior to your transfer. But, it’s worth noting that you should have at least 3 or more completed by that time to show UC Admissions that you can handle honors course load + the likelihood of you finishing the program by the end of the Spring term.

To answer your question about retaking classes you have already completed in honors, you cannot do that. For example, if you have already taken regular Freshman Composition, you can’t retake the class just to fulfill the six-class honor requirement.

Having said all of the above, if you can join the program and arrange your class schedule to take some honors classes, I would still do it. It looks better on your transcript, and it provide you with better opportunities to network with honors students & faculty members for EC and letter of rec. purposes.

Oh sorry. Forgot to add to my other post that UCLA will not consider your TAP if you complete all your Honor courses in one semester. I believe this is a new policy started for the newly admitted transfers. But ouch, that’s overkill anyways. ;/

^ I agree. I didn’t find honors courses to be more difficult than regular @ my JC, but they all do have a research paper requirement. I managed to take four during one semester, and I was quite busy at the end of the semester.

Another thing, this is just my personal suggestion having gone through the process and spoke with UCLA/UCB’s admission officers last year when I was getting ready to transfer:

I would focus on bringing up your GPA and finish your pre-reqs above everything else. Yes, it’s nice to have some ECs under your belt or be TAP certified. But, at the end of the day, UCs want your GPA to meet their standards and for you to be major ready by the time of enrollment. Just my opinion…

I’d personally say it’s more GPA and the major you apply for than anything. I didn’t do the honors program, had a 3.84 and got into both Berkeley and UCLA. I know people who did the honors program, had a 3.5 and didn’t even get into their alternate major at UCLA. If you can keep up a high GPA in the honors program, I’d say do it; it can’t hurt you.
