the interview went beautifully and i left feeling great, but i'm not too optimistic about advancing since it seems like everyone feels that their interview was stellar...

yes, you're right, im "washington d.c./suburban maryland"

the interview went beautifully and i left feeling great, but i'm not too optimistic about advancing since it seems like everyone feels that their interview was stellar...

Do you mean that in the sense that that's how it was in your region? Did all of your regional nominees feel that way, or just those of us on the site?
Because if it's the latter, it's only you from your region (I think) so don't think of this as anything against you.

yeah, i meant that those on the site reported great interview experiences. Although none of the individual posters have said they are also in my region, its a trend.

either way, i do hope to at least advance to the next regional interview...to be honest, finalist weekend sounds like a lot of work!(i will later console myself with this thought when I am not invited)

when i was waiting to be called back, there was one set of parents whose daughter was currently being interviewed. the dad would not stop talking and pacing around and saying things to those of us waiting like "oh you better see these rugs haning on the wall back here, theyre amazing" and as he like, went for a walk around the corner, his wife whispered to us "he can't stop talking." it was weird how he was probably more nervous than his kid in the interview.
This other guy who was waiting was so nervous, that I kind of wanted to hug him. When I finally went back, it was initally awkward, but then i was able to really pull myself together and come off as articulate..which is great because i was able to fill a substantial amount of time with my own speech (without rambling) so they couldn't pose too many grilling questions.

i was actually a little underwhelmed by the questions, i didnt get any greatest strength/ weakness/say something memorable prompts.

today was fun though! i wonder how many nominees there were from my region, i'm afraid there are a lot

My interview is in 4 days but I'm really trying to stay more calm and laid-back. I know the competition is tough so I'll just go in there not expecting much and try to have a good time!

Anyone have anymore tips on how to present ourselves? What kind of interesting off the wall questions they may ask?

I'm kind of nervous, but not really. Meh, who knows.

I think that everyone interviewed has similar stats and I don't think they choose based on who had ten points higher on the math SAT or who has a weighted 4.5 GPA as compared to a weighted 4.2 GPA. I think what they are looking for is what makes you stand out vis a vis citizenship, leadership, and scholarship. If there is something that makes you unusual in that regard, they will zero in on it and you will have the opportunity to elaborate. Above all, be yourself. These are extremely nice people, in my experience, who are expecting openness and can sense BS.

Advice (remember I'm really no farther along then you guys): seem relaxed and confident. Part of being an effective leader is being able to do well in an interview type situation and communicating effectively, so just being relaxed and confident will really help your case.
Also, don't give short answers. Make them extended, sound excited, and it helps to provide RELEVANT anecdotes.

Advice: know what citizenship (and leadership excellence, but those are easier) means! lol
the first question was about how id define it and what were some imp qualities... snap! i mean im familiar with the term but that surprised me.. it really shouldnt have though..

other than that I agree with PresDunn, just be collected and make sure you personalize the questions.

buena suerte.

I just finished mine
verrrr chill

I'm from the st. louis region... and apparently there's only 7 of us, and they will choose 1 to go on to the Finalist weekend. No second rounds of interviews, nothing else. I kind of feel lucky.

1 in 7 is double 3 in 41. You should feel lucky. =)
Did you have your interview yet?

Dunn, I'm in the maryland region too and have also advanced to the second round. Bond street wouldnt show up on my gps and i got stuck in the elevator right before the interview. it literally took me to the top floor and shut down, all lights off. i just started pressing random buttons and eventually it came back on, it was a little nerve wracking though haha. but yea, there were 5 interviewers in my room, 3 women and 2 men. they were really nice overall and i agree if you just maintain your composure and be straight up with them it goes really well. however this turns out, good luck. maybe we'll both make the top 3 eh? i thought the current jefferson scholars greeting people in the waiting room was a nice touch, they were pretty friendly. they were really enlightening as to how life is as a jefferson scholar, what with the trip to italy and internships and what not.

Yay! A Marylander! Where do you live generally? And what time is your next interview on Sunday?

Anne Arundel County, so the drive to BMore wasn't too bad. I believe my interview is at 1:00pm. Most people hate getting interviewed but I embrace the entire experience. It's nice to be more than a statistic.

I just read this in the paper and thought I'd share:

Cavalier Daily: Fewer Jeff Scholars to Enroll in 2009

Dean J -
Are the Jefferson Scholar candidates notified either way after their first round interview?
Thanks

Sorry, but I don't know their notification processes. You could call the Jeff Foundation on Tuesday if that isn't addressed on their website or maybe a past Jeff nominee will chime in...

I got a phone call to let me know I advanced. I think the others might have gotten letters to say they hadn't.

Last year a finalist from my school was not accepted.

accepted for admission? All finalists at the Finalist Weekend in March are told they have been admitted to the university. Or do you mean not accepted as a Jeff Scholar? Because most attendees of Finalist Weekend are not offered scholarships.

Advanced to what? Finalist weekend or round two interview?
