As anyone received confirmation that they have advanced to finalist status and are attending NSW in March? If so, how long after 2nd round and by what method? Thanks and good luck!

I haven't heard anything yet. The regional committee told me that I would hopefully hear something by the end of last week. Didn't happen. So I'm still unsure on how long it takes. Perhaps UVa is holding things up.

yes, i just found out late last week. there was only one round of interviews for my region and i was notified by a letter from the president of the foundation.

The people in my region all got letters and phone calls within a week of the interview. According to the web site, however, the interview process is concluded in January and the notifications are sent in February, so it is perfectly reasonable for many people not to have heard anything yet. Perhaps some regions are adhering to the schedule on the web site and not notifying until the first of February. It's hard to be patient, though. I remember the anxiety well.

snowwatersand, how long was it between your interview and the notification?
yeswecan, I sure hope my region's not doing that! It would drive me insane!

I'm guessing no one in my region will hear back until February, then--though this makes sense, seeing as how the interviews for my region are actually this Saturday (!).

Thanks to all who have responded. This helps put things into perspective since it's hard to know exactly what "soon" means. After the first round, I heard that day that I advanced to round two, but nothing since. Seems as if we all are on "pins and needles." YesWeCan, your voice of reason and experience is greatly appreciated.

Try to keep in mind that just being considered means that you are an excellent candidate and will probably be admitted to many fine schools. Good luck to all of you and try to think long term...a year from now, you will be happy at one of your top choices, whatever it is.

Hey I'm a nominee from the Dallas area and what happens is that after the first round of interviews they might have another round and then they select their nominee sending the list to UVa in order of which candidate they recommend. UVa selects finalists out of this recommendation but they may decide to select the 2nd or 3rd person instead of the top choice. Also they might not select anyone from that region.

Also it is true that the scholarship is separate from admission so if there are some externalities that slipped through in the scholarship process and get got by admissions then they can deny you admission.

To tell the truth its kinda nerve wracking especially seeing the numbers of people applying and getting the scholarship but only time will tell.

No...Jimmywho...UVA is not involved in the process except to confirm admission. The entire selection process is done by the Foundation. UVA admission and the JSF are totally separate entities.

Just got my response: I did not advance to nationals. Oh well. This sucks.

PresidentDunn, you seem awesome. dont even think about not getting nationals. it doesn't matter and you know that, but i'll admit any kind of rejection at this point in time especially from colleges, can feel absolutely crushing.

hey, didnt you say somewhere that uva wasnt your top choice? now, if you do get into your top choice youll be more likely to go- a full ride from uva would likely prevent you otherwise

presidentdunn...I saw your stats. You will have lots of great options! Good luck.

Thanks guys. And you probably read somewhere before Dec. 15 that my top choice was Yale--I was deferred there SCEA so I shifted my top-choice position to UVa during that intermittent period. So oh well, I've already been accepted to one college, so at least I have that to think about.
Gah. I'm such a whiner.

And good luck everyone else, I hope you all get it :-)

PresidentDunn - how were you notified of the decision? Letter, phone, e-mail? Sorry that the news wasn't what you wanted. But hey - this is a very tough process with grueling odds and you beat so many!!! You are still a winner by far. Hope to see you at UVA either way - keeping my fingers, toes, eyes, crossed!!! Good luck to everyone

They sent me a letter, directly from the organization President.
I could tell I didn't get it right away, because the paper inside the envelope was just regular white paper as opposed to the nice thick stock that had been used for the congratulatory letters in the past.

President Dunn, keep in mind that this entire process - not just the Jeff, but college admissions to the elite in general - is one big crap shoot. Your hard work, stats, etc was your ante to get into the game. From there on in it's all out of your hands. Good for you for ante'ing up in the first place.

I was depressed at the Jefferson Thursday for not advancing. I got over it.
Kid at my school was depressed at his life Thursday. He killed himself.
I think I'd much rather live without this silly scholarship that not live at all.
Just putting this in perspective for me and you guys.

Are you serious?

On another note, I'm not a finalist either.

I'm sorry.
And yes, I'm serious. The school system isn't allowed to acknowledge suicide or make an announcement about it, but I heard from several people including a teacher and there were a bunch of distraught people. So while there's been no "official" announcement of it, it's basically known.
Sucks.
