Jefferson Scholars 2009

All right, well I just got a call a bit ago about being a finalist for my region, and I figured I would start up a thread. This way, as we have our interviews, we can discuss how they go, what to expect, questions we are asked, etc.

Good luck/congratulations to all!

so you will be going to finalists weekend in March?

Should you really be discussing the contents of these interviews with others?

Shouldn’t this thread be called Jefferson Scholars 2010?

XXLAJ – Have you already had your interview and are a finalist going in March, or did you just get your interview invitation?

Has anyone in Fairfield County had their interviews yet?

Robertr - agree with you, it is unlikely that people will want to share info on the interview!! Wouldn’t be right.

GOod luck everyone.

mfs47, my son is in the same region as you and hasn’t heard anything yet.

for info on what interviews are like, read this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/275526-jefferson-scholars.html

it’s silly not to discuss interviews, that’s what college confidential is FOR.

It’s HONORABLE not to discuss these interviews. Would you go into an exam and then discuss the questions with a student who hasn’t taken the exam yet?

Think about it.

Robertr makes a good point. And of course Honor is the most important ideal at UVA.

CRL123 —“Thank You!” My daughter isn’t concerned, but I was starting to wonder if no news is bad news.

Good luck everyone.

i had my interview today. i’m from northern virginia and I was contacted a couple of weeks ago. my area has two rounds of interviews, though, the second of which takes place on january 30th. i here in 1-2 weeks whether i am eligible for the second round.

Thought about it. You’re right, I guess it IS dishonorable if you consider withholding helpful information from people who are in the same boat as you simply because they are your competitors “dishonorable.”

Had the interview today, my advice, which is likely to be read by NEXT year’s nominees, not this year’s is: be prepared (read the thread in the link I posted and practice your answers to those questions, or at least think about them in advance).

So, definitely be prepared, but also relax. the interviewers are very friendly and warm. They WANT to like you.

I guess we have different concepts of honor. I have worn the honor of honors…I graduated from Virginia.

Good luck with your interviews.

Had my first round interview today…was fantastic. I can’t speak for how it went, but they were absolutely amazing-- really good people.

my school is a new public school (4th year in operation) but the two other high schools in are district can nominate people. SO UNFAIR!!

There is a process for becoming a nominating school outline on the Jeff Foundation’s website. The Office of Admission also has “at large” bids to use on students who do not attend nominating schools. I’m not sure what the definition of fair is in this case, but I think they do a pretty good job of making sure everyone is considered!

Oh wow I didn’t know this. thank you for your response!
do the at large candidates also have to go through an interview process, or are they notified much later? (since the application deadline was only a few weeks ago)

The timing obviously doesn’t work, since many students don’t even complete their applications until some time in January. Someone who gets an at-large bid doesn’t know it, but they bypass the local interview and move to the next part of the selection process. They would only find out that they were tagged by us if they make it to the selection weekend.

Oh I see. Thanks Dean J! Can I assume that it’s more difficult for at-large candidates to make it to the final round? Since we didn’t fill out an additional app and all…and do not have the advantage of the interview nor our school’s endorsement

If you’ve been both nominated and invited for an interview, how does that affect your chances of admission to the actual University?

It doesn’t. Sure you must be strong but the 2 are completely separate.
