Jefferson Scholars Program.

My son got an email today inviting him to apply for Jefferson Scholars Program… Does anyone know what this is and is this program worth applying? Thanks

anyone have any acceptance statistics?

I’m a member of the JSP. It basically involves taking philosophy classes which aren’t very intensive. It also gives you tons of interaction opportunities with the professors. It’s a great program for non-liberal arts majors. I am in business.

@abhi30196 do you know if its a good idea to do if you’re majoring in Biology, planning to be a pre-med major and in Health Science Scholars?

It wouldn’t help you in medical school apps. However, if you have an interest in philosophy, go for it. I’d take a semester of classes and if you don’t like it, drop it in the spring. JSP looks pretty cool On your resume

How’s the application? I’m scared to look at it, haha.

@abhi30196‌ would you say this program is useful to someone already doing Plan II + a liberal arts degree?

No. JSP is for people who are doing non-liberal arts majors and want a taste of liberal arts/plan II.

^ Is it really geared specifically for non-liberal arts majors? I thought it overlapped with some of the core requirements, does this mean that JSP wouldn’t be beneficial for people already in the liberal arts college?

Look at the reading list. Is this material you would cover anyway? Or would this program put you into an intellectual peer group you might not otherwise have?

Son just got accepted to Jefferson Scholars at UT. The acceptance email says they had over 400 applications for 100 spots. I had no idea it was that competitive. They do have a waitlist though. Also, you can still apply when you are already a UT student, you don’t have to apply as a high school senior.

I thought Jefferson Scholars program was for UVA?

@dowzerw They have a Jefferson Scholar’s program at UT Austin and also one at UVA. But since this thread is for UT Austin, I presume all posters here are referring to the program at UT.

Thanks, @collegefind. I had no idea.
