how much time was there between your interview and the call. my second interview is tomorrow evening so could i expect a call the next day? that night?

Well I think all the committees handle it differently; however, I didn't get a call until about 5 days after my interview...I'm not sure if that's because there were a lot more people to interview after me or because they were deliberating over it that long

hey guys.

it's kristin--i'm the st louis area finalist. congratulations to the rest of you! and good luck to those still waiting to hear about their decisions. if any of you would like to chat on AIM i'd love to hear from you, kristin5792

hey guys. i was just reading through the threads and saw that a lot of you asked about the types of questions. even though most of your interviews are probably already over, i figure i can still share what i know.

i was interviewed by 8 uva alums (all male) in a boardroom type setting. we were all sitting in big comfy chairs around a table. we all had bottled water. before i got to the room, i waited in a waiting room. our regional director took me to the room. i introduced myself to him when i met him. when i got to the room i introduced myself to all the guys there. as more regional selection committee members came in i also introduced myself to them. we made small talk about hobbies etc. the director informed me that this interview would basically have two parts: a "getting to know you" part and a more abstract part.

during the getting to know you part they asked me stuff about my application, my essays, my extracurriculars, etc. nothing on that level was too difficult.

then they asked my why i wanted to go to uva (i didnt think that mattered but whatever) before asking me the next set of questions.

the more abstract questions included stuff like "what do you think makes up a good leader?" "you are a very confident speaker. where did this level of confidence come from?" "you have a wide array of extracurriculars. why did you choose to do them? how do you prioritize?" "how do you think a certain amount of discontent feeds debate and peace talks" (i had mentioned that i was into both government and human rights)

they thanked me for coming in, i thanked them for having me. i shook the director's hand. he smiled and said "i think they want to shake your hand too" then tonight (less than a week later) i got a call from our regional director saying that i will be getting a letter from uva in a few weeks congratulating me on being st. louis's national finalist.

to say i was ecstatic is a huge understatement.

best of luck to the rest of you! hope to see you in charlottesville.

-kristin

woo!! finalist for NJ

Congrats 436qJ. Good luck in the next round (in VA). My son was disappointed he didn't get finalist but he was realistic. He said his 2nd interview didn't go as well as the 1st...

well my second interview didn't go very well either, at least i thought it didn't. i stuttered and was nervous and took a long time to get to my answers, but i guess in the end it made some sense. I was very surprised when I got the letter. Best of luck to your son.

Does anyone know if they have already contacted the atlarge candidates and if those candidates have to go through the interview process like the regional candidates do?

I'm waiting on results from the MD 2nd round!

Do they contact you even if you didn't make the third round?

Yes fengshuibundi. My son got a letter saying he was NOT selected as a finalist (at least a week after his 2nd inteview). I think there was additional info about UVA's financial aid program in the envelope. Don't think he noticed what else was in there. While he didn't "expect" to move on, I could tell he was hoping for that. He was starting to get excited by the prospect of going to UVA - previously had been really excited by UNC's acceptance. Now it's like his reaction to UNC. Very excited about getting in to the honors program but then deflated when he wasn't invited to the scholarship day. Kind of like -well, I guess they don't think that much of me. Guess it will be months of highs and lows.

The students selected as national candidates will find out by Feb. 15 if they get to compete, my aunt said that was like the drop dead date. I do not believe there is an interview though... there might be...

Jerzgrl mom, I got the same thing today from UVA, didn't make the third round. I wasn't really excited by UVA and it wasn't the school I wanted to go to, so in a way it's a blessing that having to pick between a full ride and the college of my dreams won't necessarily happen with UVA (maybe with UMCP though...)

Doesn't mean I'm not disappointed though... I really thought I did a good job. Regular happy insane self. I prolly should have brought up my NIH internship or something. Meh, I don't really fit there anyway.

Best of luck to your son!

"So what your telling me is I still have a chance?"

good luck to everyone hoping to be selected as a national candidate!!!

So Fengshuibundi, what IS the college of your dreams?? Just curious.

Hahaa Brown =)

Total opposite I knowwwww.

Just to clarify, if you are accepted as a finalist, does the school pay for airfare? In my letter it said it would pay for transportation to and from Charlotseville which sounds too good to be true :)

Hi ahora - we're a little confused on the transportation issue ourselves, as the letter asks for flight/train/car info but doesn't specify costs, etc. It's not too big of an issue in our case because we're within (long) driving distance and will probably do so. They were specific about hotel accommodations, but as far as travel...not so much. It did say that a follow up e-mail with more details would be forthcoming, but we haven't heard anything yet. I'll post if any more info comes our way.

thanks mcmom! just on another note, are most finalists attending the session with parents?

I wouldn't think most parents would be attending - in our case, I'll drop son off and go on to visit family for a few days (using it as an excuse for my own mini-vacation!) Good luck to you - it should be an exciting weekend!
