jefferson scholars

hey ahora. first of all, congratulations on becoming a national finalist (same to your son, mcmom). i have no idea if the jefferson scholars foundation is paying for our transportation to charlottesville (that would be nice, considering i'm from st louis). my mom and sister are coming with me to charlottesville; national selection weekend is during my spring break, so we're spending a few days in either DC or NYC beforehand. also, my mom has never seen the school and my sister is a junior, so both want to take a tour and learn more about it. personally, i'm fine with this; they help me stay calm and if my mom falls in love with UVA, she may even let me go if i don't get "The Jefferson." (I SURE HOPE SO!)

see you in march!
kristin

my letter asks for transport info but i dont think it implies anything about them paying for it. i think its just so they can pick you up from the train station or airport. i'm only coming from NJ so its not that big a deal, but i dont think they're paying.

they do mention reserved rooms at teh Cavalier Inn, but I think they're assuming you will come alone. I don't think they make arrangements for family memebers.

My letter says they're paying for it. We're supposed to give them a receipt or some proof of purchase and they'll reimburse us when we get there.

My question is, even if they expect you to come alone, can parents come just to tour the campus independently? I really want my parents to see the school before I make a decision, but I understand the weekend is supposed to be focused on interviewing the students.

Another thing!

Do they use your UVa application as well to determine it? I'm filling out the nomination info now and it asks for a personal essay. Should I use the same personal essay I used on my UVa app or another one?

you're filling out nomination info now? didn't you do the application before? min was due november 6th. maybe its because you're not in a region, but how did you get to be a finalist without submitting an application?

the jefferson scholars foundation never sees your UVa app. I used the same personal essay fro both UVa and Jefferson

The way it was explained to me was that the admissions office selects 20-40 applications from students whose schools weren't eligible to nominate and forwards those to the Foundation. Then the foundation narrows down that list to 5-10 who are then invited to become finalists (I think last year there were 4 at-large apps chosen). Now I have to fill out the nomination form, etc. before the selection weekend.

oh ok. i understand now.

Hey does anyone know if they are going to tell us at the end of the weekend whether or not we were selected as scholarship recipients, or will they send us letters later on?

Of course! We're happy to have your parents visit us, but please understand that the admission staff is elbow deep in reading right now, so a Dean may not be available to chat with them before and after tours and info sessions.

The Jeff Foundation's website has a list of dates. I'm sure the answer can be found there.

I checked the website it only gives the date regarding when we must let them know by which is April 20th...

i read an article on UVa's website about the 2005(?) jefferson scholars weekend. there were 96 people there, 44 scholarships offered, 33 accepted. they were notified by e-mail on monday morning. i'm assuming it will be the same for us? best of luck to all of you!
