Jefferson Scholarship

I just received an email from the Jefferson Scholarship Committee for the Saint Louis Area. However, the interview isn't till February 1st which seems rather later since the website says they pick regional finalists in February. I was wondering if anyone knows why they're having it so late and if they might be only be doing one interview. I also applied Early Action so I will know if I got in by that point, so I was wondering if that will have any effect on my Jefferson Scholarship chances?

To my knowledge, no one on College Confidential is from the Jefferson Scholars Foundation or on the interview panels.

You can email the foundation with questions…

I’m curious about Jefferson Scholar’s stats. Anyone?

Disneydad, from what I understand, most Jefferson Scholars have impeccable “stats,” if you’re referring to GPA or SAT scores, etc.; I remember reading informational material that said most Scholars score a perfect 800 in at least one (or maybe two?) areas of the SAT. The past two nominees from my high school were both valedictorian, and I imagine that trend is common. However, those “stats” alone will not earn students the scholarship. The interviews test applicants for critical thinking skills and a complex understanding of current events and political issues. One of my friends was asked in the first round of interviews to comment on the potential legalization of marijuana, for example, and another was asked about Obamacare. It’s not about political views, but it is about demonstrating engagement not just in academics and “the books” but also in real-world issues.

@OP, DC metro area interviews are also scheduled on Feb 1.

Thanks. That helps.

I’m in Boston, and mine are on February 8th.

Is there anyone else who still hasn’t heard from his or her Regional chair whether or not he or she is still in the competition?

I have not heard anything yet (from Mass.) did the people that heard find out over email or phone call?

I haven’t heard yet i don’t expect to make it to the next stage of the competition due to my less than perfect stats (2260SAT, 34ACT, 730SATII) but I would at least like some closure!

I live in the suburbs around Philly, if anybody was wondering. If other kids from Philly have heard anything, please let me know!

I also have not heard anything yet. From friends from my school that have been nominated in the past I believe they were notified in late December which has me worried. Although I am not expecting much I also would at least like to know whether or not I will be receiving an interview. If anyone receives any notification in the next few days please let us know!

For those of you worried about stats, this scholarship is much more about your interview and critical thinking skills than test scores. A girl from my school who received the award last year had roughly a 2140 on the SAT but had fabulous public speaking skills. She repeatedly tells me to just be myself because that is what they are really looking for. In short, they aren’t just looking for some perfect-scoring robot. I received my letter for a region in NOVA (that has a lot of competition for the scholarship) a couple days ago about my interview in mid-January.

Does everyone that get nominated by their schools get a regional interview, or do they select only certain people? Trying to figure out stats. Jefferson site says that last year, 1,400 students were nominated.

Haha well I got an email back in December about the interview, I just must not have seen it. Yeah my interview is also on Feb. 8th (from Mass.)

FYI, I’m international and received no news regarding interview invitations.

I’m from NOVA and my interview is in a few days

I am from southern VA and just got notified by email about my interview in two weeks.

My child emailed the Foundation today because she has not been contacted about a regional interview(Southeast). They said interviews are still being scheduled(she should receive an email soon) and to contact them if she hasn’t heard by February.

I’m from Louisiana. Already got an email that I didn’t get at interview. They notified me a week later than they said they were going to…

Does everyone get an email?
