Our daughter is thrilled with her Scripps acceptance and a JES Scholarship!

First question: The scholarship is actually more than we had anticipated (not complaining!) - seems to be half of total expenses versus the half of tuition quoted on the website. For students/parents/families who have received this scholarship in the past, can we assume that the scholarship will be structured this way in the future - half of expenses instead of half tuition? Or does Scripps offer more freshman year and then cut back to a half tuition scholarship in subsequent years?

Second question: It states that the scholarship is renewable if a student is making "satisfactory academic progress". Can we assume that "satisfactory academic progress" means a 2.0 minimum G.P.A. as defined in the Scripps catalog? Our daughter has been very fortunate and received other scholarship offers, but many of the minimum G.P.A. requirements are fairly high. If Scripps is 2.0, that will be a deciding factor; we don't anticipate that our daughter will "crash and burn" but also don't want her to have to worry about maintaining a scholarship.

Thank you in advance for any info!

Hi involved mom,

I’m a current sophomore and a JES recipient. The specific james e scripps scholarship covers half of the tuition, but being a JES scholar means that the FA office goes all out to meet demonstrated need and to make Scripps affordable (for all 4 years). So, the rest of the grant and scholarship money that you are receiving comes from a variety of sources and donors. They do not cut back on this aid package after Freshman year. The way it is structured now is how you can expect it to look in the future as well. The only reason it might significantly change is if there is a significant change in family income or wealth that is reflected on the FAFSA.

And yes, I believe the FA office uses the same definition as the Scripps catalog. However, Scripps also comes with a very supportive community of faculty and advisers that are there to help if your daughter begins to struggle for whatever reason. The JES scholarship also stays in place if one decides to take a semester off from school.

Hope this helped, and let me know if you have any more questions!
