What school would a Jewish girl from right outside NYC fit in best at? How’s the Hillel program and Greek life?
You might want to post this in the Parents Forum. There are many there that can tell you about the Hillel programs and other concerns.
@mom2collegekids isn’t it in the Parent’s Forum?
All have excellent Jewish life for the reform to modern orthodox, although IU’s Greek rush is extremely convoluted owing to the requirement that sororities only admit as many members as they have beds available in their house. This Winter Break I went on Birthright and happened to meet some IU students staying in the same hotel as my group. They had very positive things to say about the school, as well as Jewish life there (I go to a school with relatively few Jews compared to the Northeast/ midAtlantic regions).
What sort of Jew are you? Eg, are you reform, conservative, modern orthodox, hassidic, etc? That could influence which schools you might want to eliminate.
Agree. All would be fine
@whenhen reform/conservative … I am very active in BBYO and served on the chapter board for 3 years, 1 being President.
Then you will have zero issues at any of the schools in terms of Jewish life.
All of these schools have lots of Jewish students and lots from the NYC area (with some overlap). All have historically Jewish sorority chapters as well, if that interests you.
One of my young NYC neighbors went to IU and graduated 3=4 years ago. Her mom is originally Israeli and is sort of modern Orthodox from what I can figure out. She was very worried about her D going to IU, but was “pleasantly surprised” at how large and welcoming the Jewish community there was.
What Hanna said.
I have friends & relatives who went to these school 35-40 years ago and know many kids who are recent graduates or there now. Long history of Jewish students at those schools.
If you stop by the Jewish “B” student thread - you’ll find we have discussed and recommended all 3. Generally speaking, large universities such as those you named, have plenty of Jewish students and a variety of Jewish organizations - Hillel, Chabad, etc., as well as Jewish Greek life. So - I’d recommend examining each school more in terms of the academic program that interests you, cost, location, etc., as I think Jewish life at each would be fine.
@Tooth1010 You are right. I was looking at this on my phone earlier and didn’t realize that you already were in the Parents Forum.
You should look into College of the Ozarks. My friend is Jewish and she’s having a blast there.
