Hey -
I was just wondering about the Jewish life at Dartmouth. Is it easy to find? Is there any hostility (I'm leaning towards no, but just checking)? How active is the Hillel/any form of Jewish life? I haven't heard a lot about Dartmouth, since I'm not from the east coast, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dartmouth, long ago, had the reputation of being an anti-semetic school. There are still people out there that hold this view, but it is completely gone from Hanover now, as far as I can see (many of the senior administrators are Jewish, which also helps). There's a beautiful center for jewish life (the Roth center) which also serves as the synagogue for the area. The Rabbi is just an outstandingly wonderful person. There's also a chabbat Rabbi who came to town about a year ago, and has been well received, if that's your thing. I hear that he has great dinners at his house every Friday.

The Jewish life at Dartmouth is definitely small but vibrant. The Jewish community is very close- besides Shabbat dinners, there are a number of other events such as:

-"Jews and Java": free coffee and socializing at the bookstore
-"Taste of Yisrael": free hummus and hookah every Monday
-Bagel brunches every Sunday at the Roth Center
-regular lectures and workshops with professors and rabbis
-Jewish intramural teams like "The God Squad" ice hockey team, the soccer team, or the frisbee team
-plenty of travel opportunities, like the Belarus community service trip every year, or traveling with Birthright
-THe Jew Crew, which is a freshman team of Jewish students who plan events and activities

Just sign up for the "Jewsletter" once you get here and it will keep you updated.

that sounds fun.. i really wanna try and get involved w/ the jewish community evern though i'm basically the most pathetically un-jewish jew ever. I've gone to an anglican school for 6 years and am one of 2 jews in my grade so i'm looking forward to actually having a jewish community at all!

well long island always sends a healthy amount of people...many of which are jewish.

When I visited Dartmouth, I wandered into the Hillel after my tour. I met the director of Hillel and the assistant to the Rabbi and they were both incredibly nice. They talked to me for over twenty minutes about Jewish life at Dartmouth and about the differences between a school with a small close knit Jewish community (like Dartmouth) and one with a larger community with many different options (such as Penn and Brandeis). This visit to Hillel made me really enthusiastic about Dartmouth.
