JHU Admissions Chances 2012

Hi, from what I've seen online and from several people including alumni, JHU would be the perfect fit for me and I'm definitely considering applying there. I've heard it has a great pre-law program, which is what I'd pursue in college. My only question is whether I'd get in, and whether applying ED helps or hurts my chances of admission.

Here are my stats:

White Male
Junior from New Jersey

UW GPA: 3.6/4.0
W GPA: 3.8/4.0

SAT: 2000/2400, 1300/1600 (730 CR, 570 M, 700 W)
Took AP History and Psychology exams last week
Will take SAT IIs: World History and English

Honors and AP Courses taken through high school
National Honor Society
NJ Boys State Delegate

3 Years Varsity Swimming (not captain as I was an underclassmen), All-County, All-League,
All-State honors acheived, Junior Olympics with club team
3 Years Track and Field (1 Year JV, 2 Years Varsity)

President of Keystone Club 2010-11 (leadership group associated with the Boys and Girls Clubs), VP 2009-10, Sergeant-at-Arms 2008-09, NE Regional Leadership Committee 2010
Appx. 400 volunteer hours logged
Boy of the Year 2009 with the Boys and Girls Club
Work experience for 2 years as a lifeguard

I don't know if it factors into the application but my major hobby and passion is making music. I'm a recognized producer/DJ in and around northern NJ/NYC, and I'm "climbing the ladder" to real recognition as a pro, although it's not ultimately what I want to do unless opportunity really strikes.

Thanks

Both your GPA and your SAT scores are low… I’d get the GPA up your first semester of senior year and maybe try a late ACT (that way there’s no need to submit SAT IIs). Try and get captain next year for your swim team, they like leadership positions, but otherwise your ECs are good.

If you wrote an essay about your music journey, that’d probably set you better up there because it’s a unique expertise. The main thing is that GPA, though.

One question, though; why Hopkins for pre-law? I don’t think they have it as a major, and I’d look for something in DC or New York for law.

Ultimately, I think your academic profile is weaker than the school would like but write a good essay, get some great recommendations and apply ED and you may have a chance.

JHU has great placements into law schools.

good luck

Wow you definitely have a higher chance at admission than me. My 1st choice too. If you really want to attend JHU with an ardor, apply ED. If you’re adumbrate about your future there, you know the rest but pretty good overall.

Definitely agree with Wealth of Information about the letter. The avg of the SAT is between 1950 and 2300 hundred I believe so you’re in the low avg so write a stellar essay. I’m not even sure of applying at all seeing all these chance me posts with better credentials, hope they have some arbitrary acceptances! Hope you get in and let me know how it turns out!

Honestly, it sounds like you have really similar stats to me…I had a 2070 on SATS and 3.8 weighted GPA. If it is where you want to go, apply ED. Thats the best advice I can give you, because I doubt I would have been accepted regular. But only do it if your 110 percent sure, because I had doubts after but now i know its where I want to be.
But really, stats don’t lie. ED has an acceptance rate of over 30 percent, while regular was 18 this year and will only go down.
