Chances for JHU

Hi I am a part of the graduating class of 2012! I haven't really been on CC that much so I don't exactely know how to post but I was wondering about my chances for JHU.

I switched schools from a public high school to school that requires SAT to get in and is combined with a university. I had a hard time adjusting and faced some personal problems as well.

I really wanted to apply for BME but I feel that all my chances are gone. Is there any hope?

I made a 4.0 until my junior year (when I transferred) and both my semesters my junior year have been 3.26.

The classes at my current high school are very rigorous (more than ap and ib) and my high school does not rank. I was used to being at the top of my class and then when I moved to this school I sunk quite a bit compared to my peers.

I have really good ECs (leadership positions) and research experience as well as a TON of community service.

My SAT goal is (superscored) about a 2300. My highest in math has been an 800 and writing is a 730 but my critical reading is only a 630, which I hope to increase on my next and final SAT.

I have taken 5 SAT Subject Tests (2 scores are yet to come).
Math II: 780
World History: 700
Spanish: 660

I've taken a total of 8 aps (6 this year and 2 last year). My school does not follow an AP curriculum so I self studied the APs and took them at another high school.

What can I do to increase my chances (or are they completely eliminated)?
Should I apply ED and explain my situation or RD?
Should I even apply for BME?

Oh all the questions I have.
Thanks for everything you guys!

Bump. Anyone?

I think you’re just fine! Colleges recognize that the rigor of the classes you’re taking will impact your grades! I had a similar problem, but I never switched schools … I had a 4.0 in freshman and sophomore years (all honors) and then I got into AP classes (my teachers are ball-busters for the most part - particularly AP Chem) and my grades dropped dramatically (went from high 90s to lowish-mid 80s) and that’s really okay! Most people need an adjustment period!

Your scores are great and you are very bright and all you need to do is show interest and do well on your essays! Good luck!

I would disagree with lex. Hopkins admissions do not leave much room for imperfections. Several items in your description have cause for concern. The notion that a heavy EC load is a reasonable excuse for inferior grades is false. In terms of college admissions the priority of items starts with grades and FINISHES with ECs. As for you grades, it is a well known fact that freshman and sophomore years are far easier academically than junior year. Even though you had a tough course load you did not perform up to your previous standards demonstrating either a drop in your motivation or a lack of ability to perform at the college level.

While i still encourage you to apply (Hopkins is a really wonderful institution), I would suggest applying to enough safety schools that you find appealing.
Not everybody has to be in a CC top school.
