<p>Well, one reason is that many people did not declare yet. </p>
<p>For example, I am part of the class of 2013, and I am planning to double major in Applied Math and Biomedical Engineering, but I did not declare my major to Applied Math as of yet. Perhaps if you check next year, the numbers in the class of 2013 will grow. </p>
<p>Also, I think that Applied Math has two unique features:</p>
<p>1) Students usually have no background in it from HS so it’s not something that students come right out of high school and want to study it - it’s something, as mentioned above, that you pick up later on.</p>
<p>2) Applied math at most places is more of an interdisciplinary style major and can add a more quantitative foundation for students who have a primary interest in other areas, ie Economics. </p>
