JHU Applied Math class size

I saw that the Applied Math class size has been shrinking for the past few years at JHU - Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering

There are 1/2 the number of under grads in the class from 2010 vs 2013.

What is the reason for this?

“Me want go medical school.”

Well, one reason is that many people did not declare yet.

For example, I am part of the class of 2013, and I am planning to double major in Applied Math and Biomedical Engineering, but I did not declare my major to Applied Math as of yet. Perhaps if you check next year, the numbers in the class of 2013 will grow.

And yes, “Me want go medical school.”

AdamJaz, Sozo91 - Thank you for your replies.

Sozo91, Your answer does make some sense of it.

Also, I think that Applied Math has two unique features:

1) Students usually have no background in it from HS so it’s not something that students come right out of high school and want to study it - it’s something, as mentioned above, that you pick up later on.

2) Applied math at most places is more of an interdisciplinary style major and can add a more quantitative foundation for students who have a primary interest in other areas, ie Economics.

hth

That’s actually a good point about people declaring majors. Applied math seems to be something a lot of people don’t start out in, also.

Not sure if you are the same person who posted an Applied Math and Statistics question to the Hopkins Forums, but if not you should check this out:
