Chances for bme?
Well, it all depends. I’m assuming you’re a rising senior. Anyway, my thoughts on your chances are:
- GPA is pretty good. I’m pretty sure it’s above the average entering GPA, but have you taken a lot of rigorous classes, like AP/dual enrollment? Out of all the AP and advanced classes offered at your school, how many have you taken? What is your class rank?
- Sports: Sports show good involvement in extracurricular activities and offer a chance at leadership opportunities. Have you or will you be a captain of any of these teams? How good are you in these sports? Have you placed or gotten awards at the national or state level?
- Clubs: Clubs don’t really mean much unless you have a leadership position. So, do you?
- Research: That’s an interesting one. Research generally helps, but your level of involvement affects how much it helps. I have multiple friends that did research that didn’t make any top 20 schools, although their level of research was doing mundane and menial tasks. My one friend, who was a published author, made it into Yale.
- SAT/test scores: kinda bad. You definitely need to get that up. Use the summer that you have left and cram as hard as possible. Definitely aim for at least a 1500.
Altogether, your chances IMO don’t look too great even for A&S, let alone BME.
I agree with vrhou98. You’re GPA and ECs look good, but your SAT scores are well below the ICR for Hopkins general admission let alone BME. Keep in mind that while the Hopkins atomisation rate is 11%, the BME admission rate is much lower - they don’t release official statistics, but I’d say 5% is a reasonable estimate. I’d say you’ll need to bring that SAT score up to at least a 1400 (preferably 1500+) to have a good shot.
Class Rank 15/135 Top 11% 3.7UW GPA
I’ll have taken 7 AP plus Physics which is AP weighted with much of the same content scheduling conflicts barred me from taking more AP classes due to my schools block schedule
I’ve taken AP Bio as a sopomhere then junior year AP English AP Econ APUSH AP French as well as pre clac and honors Chem
Next year is AP English AP French AP Calc and AP level Physics weighted as AP but not actually college board approved
I’ll be captain of track in the spring and I was all-conference triple jumper as well as 4th in my division for states
I’m also runner ups in the state for soccer last fall in the smallest of the four divisions
I was founder of the biology Olympiad at my school and am part of an AP bio study prep group
I work at the 3rd best university in my state helping the professors and grad students figure out a way to view cells through and online program that I’m the first person to test I will also be researching the effects of different diets on cancer cells
27 on ACT gonna retake
1290 Superscored SAT gonna retake
620 Bio M gonna retake and took chemistry but did so bad I’m not gonna share that lol
I’m planning on writing some really good essays and got some teacher that write good recs
I just don’t want to focus on the test during senior year but will retake all three in September October and novemebr
Regardless, your test scores are much too low. The median SAT/ACT score of admitted students in the Hopkins class of 2020 is approximately 1475/33 - and that’ll be slightly higher for BME. Hopkins has thousands of applicants with ECs similar to yours and higher test scores. You’ll need to raise your scores if you want to compete.
Any suggestions on how I should structure the presentation of my research like just write a 25 page paper or something concise or maybe even a PowerPoint
Also what are tips to score a 1500+ on SAT
And 34+ on ACT
Where are you presenting the research? Most conferences and organizations will have specific guidelines as to what they want (poster, PowerPoint, paper, etc). If you’re not presenting at a conference you can wroite a paper and try to get it published. This is something you should discuss with your PI though.
As for raising your scores, my advise is to spend a lot of time studying. Do practice tests, take a course, do practice problems, basically do whatever you can to do practice problems.
Thanks I really appreciate the input
Bump
Seriously, I thought bumping wasn’t a thing on CC. OP, seriously. At this point, it’s a little too late to change anything, other than your test scores. The opinions of a bunch of strangers won’t change a thing.
Regarding test prep, I agree with saif235. Just do as many practice test with exam format as possible
Just took a practice test and got a 29 from the new official book so I hoping with more study from the book and the Princeton review I can achieve that 36

30 ACT Superscore with a 4.08 GPA now
Is 4.08 your Weighted GPA? If so, then that’s very below average
Really? I thought their average was a 3.99
For my class, the class of 2020, the average unweighted GPA is 3.93. That means that with most GPA weighing systems, that 3.93 becomes a 4.9 or even a 5.00+ GPA. You’re also not even top 10% of your class. 93% of the class of 2020 was in the top 10%. Look, here’s my opinion. You can apply, and you should, especially ED if you want the best chance. However, you should really look into having safety schools.
Well this is my reach school so only slightly expecting to get in but where do you find these statistics?
Ur gpa is too low
