JHU ED chances? I will not chance you back because I'm an arse.

Jk about the latter sentence, btw. I WILL chance you back so please, please, pleeease don't disregard my thread.

I'd like it if you could chance me for JHU's BMEand JHU in general, because BME's a very hard program to get into, but JHU can still accept applicants for non-BME.

--About Me--
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: East Asian
I'm a US citizen going to an all-Chinese school in China. What's unique about this is that I came here in the 8th grade and didn't know diddly squat about Chinese.

--Grades--

GPA: 3.84 (Huge upward trend on my Chines since 9th grade)
School doesn't do weighted GPA. In fact, it doesn't do UW GPA's
either, but the 3.84 was calculated by me on a pretty rigorous scale.
Class Size: 160 (Used to be 206, but a LOT of students left to study abroad)
Class Rank: Top 5%

--Testing--

SAT: 2230 single sitting (690 CR, 770 WR, 770 M)
SAT Subject Tests: 2380 composite (780 Physics, 800 Math II, 800 Chemistry)
AP: 5 Calculus AB, 5 Physics C Mechanics, 5 Chemistry

--Extracurriculars--

Research at university computer lab - 11, 12
QA Testing for communications software - 11, 12
Model UN - 10, 11
Theater: King Lear - Lead Actor, awarded Best Actor, 10th grade
High School Musical - Director, Organizer and Narrator (I had my hands full), 11th
Guitar - 9, 10, 11, 12
School Sports Club (just random sports. Nothing like JV/Varsity) - 9, 10, 11
Chinese Painting and Sketching - 9, 10, 11, 12

Volunteering: Orphanage in rural China
Tutoring elementary students English, sometimes Math, and occasionally
even Chinese.
Total hours: ~160

--Awards--

AP Scholar
Peking University Model UN Security Council - Most Potential (National Level)
Guangdong Biology Competition - Provincial 3rd Prize (Regional)
Province Chemistry Competition - Citywide 1st Prize (Regional)

Essays: GREAT
Recommendations: Two are great, one is good.

I copy pasted these from my previous chance thread, so don't be surprised and say, "***? This guy made no effort to spruce up his chance thread! Epic fail!" if you've chanced me before. Sry for rambling on and thanks for chancing me!

What is JHU?

Johns Hopkins University. Sorry if that was unclear but I’m assuming anyone who can give me an accurate assessment knows what JHU means.

Bump. 10char

you are IN! OMG, you are so great in WR. i can’t find a way to boost my SAT!

Lol, thanks for the encouragement, but I really don’t think a good writing score’s gonna cut it with a competitive university like JHU. If you wanna boost your writing, go check out silverturtle’s guide in the SAT preparation forum. If you’re already finished with testing, then a 2000+ can’t hurt you for most good schools. If it’s possible could you take a look at my entire profile and not just my academics? Thanks.

Grades: I’ll use class rank as a measure. Top 5% is good enough for JHU
SAT: CR is pretty low, and that worries colleges. The other two sections are good. Whatever, its too late now. I would bet the other two sections balance it out. Check
SAT IIs: check
ECs: average, maybe above. Certainly won’t get you in, but probably won’t keep you out.
Awards: That national “most potential” seems interesting…so good job there.
Demonstrated Interest: check.

I would bet that you are in. The only strike against you is that CR score. unfortunately, its harder for internationals than for Americans, but I would tend to think that you would get in. (of course, I thought Christian Soldier would get into Harvard, so what do i know). I don’t know enough about BME to chance you, sorry.

Overall, Good job!

Edit: you are a US citizen, so scratch the part about internationals.

Chance back?http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1007132-chance-3-3-senior-year-ive-done-what-i-can-do.html</a></p>

Thanks dude! I like how you made my hopes waver with the good grades, bad CR, betting that I’m in, Christian Soldier example, etc. You get my point. I’ll chance you back as soon as I finish typing this. I agree, my CR sucks compared to a lot of the other applicants but hey, at least it isn’t below 25th percentile xD.

I can’t tell, if you are being sarcastic or what, but I assure you, I was only trying to be nice by listing the strengths and weaknesses. I wanted to bolster your hopes, but keep them in check at the same time. I hope and think you will get in, but I wanted to remind you of the stochastic nature of college admissions (thus the CS example).

I wasn’t sarcastic :stuck_out_tongue: Sorry if I sounded that way.

bump 10char.
thx

med-high match, you’re pretty good but there’s always some luck involved w/bme
ed/rd?

your gpa is fine
sat is weak for cr, although its probably a pain to take sat’s in china…
your ec’s are pretty good - research, model un + chem/bio, maybe theater/arts
good sat 2’s

Awesome, that’s good to hear! But, I heard that BME’s competition’s on par with that of Harvard and Stanford :open_mouth: I mean, if BME’s med-high match, then JHU’s like… low match/safety??

Bump. I want more feedback :)

i meant mid/high match for jhu, you have a very good shot at the school in general
you’re right about bme, and i mean that its (probably) going to come down to luck since your stats dont ‘amaze’ but are rather ‘very good’

I’ve heard that BME is quite rigorous; then again your scores are pretty stellar. I will say that your lack of extracurriculars in the sciences is a little confusing and might work against you in some way, although otherwise your breadth of ECs is quite good. With that said, it’s probably one of those things that are necessary but not sufficient.

Johns Hopkins, match. BME, reach.

[Swarthmore ED. A chance for a chance.](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1026898-swarthmore-ed-chance-chance.html"]Swarthmore”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1026898-swarthmore-ed-chance-chance.html)

Thanks for chancing me. I chanced you back.

Bump

Should be in as long as your essays and recommendations are good. Your stats are great for JHU.

Only 80% of admitted students are in the top 10%, so your top 5% rank should be perfect.

SAT Mid-50 Ranges:

CR: 630-730, despite your 690, you’re above the middle of this range.
M: 670-770, right at the upper end
W: 650-730, exceptional!

Your extra-curriculars are also quite good. I would definitely predict IN at JHU ED :)

Haha, that’s really great to hear. I’ve been worrying about my 690 CR but aren’t those stats for 2009? On JHU’s admissions page their CR range for 2010 is 670-770 :x

Nonetheless, thanks for chancing me and I wish you the best of luck in getting into those top schools Nosike!

Dude, you’re in to JHU as long as your essay doesn’t falter. At first I thought you were from China and that would’ve made it harder, but I now see that you’re a US citizen.

It seems like you should have a lot to write about. So good luck!

Hehe, it’s interesting how many people get thrown off by my citizenship… Thanks for chancing me! I’ll chance you back if you have a thread/create one if the future!
