I got accepted to Johns Hopkins Neuroscience program and the NYU 7 year BA/DDS dental program. I honestly have no idea which one would be better, especially since the careers are so different. Any advice would be a major help. Thank you!

It all depends on which career YOU want to pursue. No one can tell you which career is better for you. You know yourself better than anyone else knows you.

If you’re going to become a dentist either way, the BA/DDS program makes more sense.

If you’re undecided about your career, go to JHU. Neuroscience is not a “career”, it’s a major - you could do anything with the degree, in science and non-science fields, whereas a DDS degree limits you to dentistry. JHU has really good science programs. If you change your mind, you could switch into Bio or Chem or whatever. The Dental program is a really stupid thing to do if you’re not positive you want to be a dentist.

How hard is it to go into ortho after graduating from NYU dental school?
Is the competition harder than if you graduate from any other schools?
If I apply to other dental schools (say, Harvard or Columbia) after my undergrad, would it be easier to go from NYU 3 year biology or JHU 4 year neuro?

^ I don’t know anything about ortho, but I know NYU has a good dental program so assuming you do well, you should be a competitive applicant when you apply.

Also, I’m curious as to why you would study Biology at NYU but Neuro at JHU? If you’re interested in Neuro, why wouldn’t you study it at NYU…? The Neuro dept at NYU is arguably better than our Bio program.

And if Dental schools are anything like Med schools, then they care mostly about GPA and DAT. JHU has the better reputation in the sciences though. They have a fantastic neuro program!

Oh, I’m in Biology by default because of the BA/DDS program. I guess I’m leaning more towards Dentistry… but JHU neuro is a hard one to let go. Have you heard of anyone who has transferred from NYU BA/DDS to another dental school?
