JHU ranking

ADMISSION DANIEL said,

Making assumptions about the Hopkins image from your country does not mean it is true in America or across the world.

In Hong Kong, and in China, no one has a single idea of what Johns Hopkins is. A school definitely needs to improve its reputation, to get students better chances in getting jobs in the rest of the world.

The American way of seeing things doesnt reflect the rest of the world to a very large extent.

the employers of any country would have heard of JHU; however, farmers would not.

(especially in the medical field)

to be very honest,

this isnt true.

ask anyone whos lived in asia their entire life.

this is just the reality.

however,

wif the decrease admission rate,

the charles village project,

and the donation from bloomberg,

we do all hope that jhus ranking would get into the top ten in this coming year.

mybigdream, where are u from? I'm from Thailand and everyone here seems to know that JHU is very prestigious

I'm in Shanghai for the summer and people here definitely have very limited knowledge of Hopkins. It's odd, really, since they do know other big name, non-Ivy schools. MIT, Duke, NYU, Stanford.

I am from Hong Kong and I understand Hong Kong more than anyone else that I know.

In Hong Kong, everyone would have a huge question mark in their head when ppl talk about johns hopkins.

the hong kong people at johns hopkins also have come to the conclusion that no one knows about johns hopkins in hong kong.

first, hopkins doesnt really make an effort in introducing the school in other places other than the states, when skools like yale, harvard, and princeton always have talks and presentations.

this is an issue of serious concern.

hopkins is a good skool. but from the international perspective, its reputation needs to be improved for sure.

no one has even heard of johns hopkins in such a cosmopolitan city as hong kong.

do you i need stress further how serious the problem is?

A couple of months ago, my mother showed me an article from a Chinese-language newspaper that published a ranking of the best universities internationally. Hopkins actually placed number five or something like that. However, UWisconsin-Madison was also in the top ten on the list (great school, but top ten internationally?), so take it as you will.

One simple lesson I have learned in my many years of Admissions is that some people have their opinions and like to state them as fact. They will not consider other points of view, nor will they concede that there can be other points of view. In such circumstances, I have learned to state what I know, and then step away. That is what I will be doing now.

"In Hong Kong, and in China, no one has a single idea of what Johns Hopkins is."

I choose to disagree with this statement. The reputation of Johns Hopkins in many countries in Asia is quite strong, sometimes surpassing the reputation of Hopkins in the States. All research we have done continues to prove this, and therefore we have no question of our presence and prestige throughout Asia. Our applicant pool is quite strong from these areas, and continues to grow each year.

There will be many people who disagree with what "mybigdream" has stated as a "serious problem."

Finally, what I have wrote on this thread is clearly my opinion based on my years in Admissions and especially my years at Hopkins. Believe me or not, that is your choice. I know from first-hand knowledge how my University operates, the Admissions practices we follow, and what our goals are and will be.

Enough said...

oh snap.

ten characters

Don't care. I'm not moving to Hong Kong or Bangkok anytime soon!

HAha, China is becoming the super power in the world soon.

That's what they said about Japan. You're aware that growth rates drop off once you stop being third-world, correct?

Any updates on jhu.edu being remodeled?

Slowing growth rates might slow the process, but China will have the world's largest economy within fifty years.

Pretty good for a developing country.

It's good to know that China will have the largest economy when we're 70. How we'll wish we'd learned Mandarin then.

'Course having the largest economy doesn't preclude the existence of other superpowers, Genghis.
