Help! I am debating between Johns Hopkins and McGill. I really liked the Johns Hopkins campus, the community feel, and I would definitely hope to major in writing seminars which is amazing there but I'm a little worried about the people/social life at JHU. McGill is in Montreal which is amazing and there seems to be great diversity in the student body. They don't really have a strong writing program though based on what I know. I'm a work hard play hard kinda girl. I like going to concerts, film festivals, etc..and I feel like that would be more possible at McGill. But I also feel like the JHU reputation would be best for my career..
any advice??
Thank you so much in advance!!

I’m heading to Hopkins in the fall. I faced a similar problem that you are now struggling with (concern of social life over strength of a schools program in a given field). Best advice I can give is this. Your social life is what you make of it. Want to study and hang in your room all day? Go for it. Want to study to meet academic need but party/be social in the off hours? Why not. A healthy balance of priorities and good time management skills are all that is required for what It is you seek. As to the student body at Hopkins: the kids seemed driven, intellectual, and down to earth. Were some more recluse? Sure. But plenty were amiable and social enough. What If you end up hating the student body for some reason though? Baltimore is a large city with numerous colleges. If you are as outgoing as you claim then finding friends at other schools would not seem to pose an issue. It’s all what you make of it. I hope that I helped in some way, if not, I am sorry.

Thank you, FinalEyes! I really appreciate it. I hope you love JHU and maybe ill be seeing you there!

Hey I’ll definitely recommend Hopkins. I don’t want to bash McGill since I don’t know it that well, but I know two people that went there. One got thrown out for partying too much and the other is unhappy there and wanted to transfer to Hopkins.
Hopkins is not a party school, but you can have a great social life. I go out to parties twice a week and I know others who go out 3 or 4 times a week. The parties may not be as good as ones at state schools, but they are still really fun and most parties are open to anyone.

Hmm. I was just reading about a student who wants to leave JHU to go to U Toronto or McGill. Funny. Look up thundercatsgo.

^Thread is from way last year

Unless you are a Canadian, I see no reason to choose McGill over JHU.
