JMU Decisions - Class of 2025

Email my son got only mentioned Madison Scholarship… not the Dingeldine one which is full instate…

What major is your daughter planning to study? And was it the Dingledine Scholarshp?

It said at least half of instate, which would be significantly less than other offers (although I think JMU’s initial OOS cost is less than others). Is that all of the merit offered (she actually did the majority of research and didn’t know if she should write the short essay)?

What does half of instate mean - $6,000 since instate is $12,000? Ugh.

I think so (my daughter actual went on the tour with my sister and my niece). At first I thought it meant a chance to be OOS but with instate tuition (which is a good deal, since instate tuition and board is about $33,000 here).

Hi! My son is currently a freshman from NJ. He loves it. He’s in the Honors program (but chose not to live in honors housing). I can tell you that JMU does not give much merit $ at all. I imagine that the financial crunch of Covid will impact these awards too.

He turned down significant merit $ to higher ranked colleges, but chose JMU for the friendly and fun student body, the ease of choosing/changing majors, the relative proximity to home, and the personal attention in a large university.

For those waiting, be aware that housing selection (like at many colleges) will be based on when you submitted your deposit.

D admitted OOS (New edit: also admitted to Honors College)
GPA 3.52uw/3.98w
No class rank
No SAT score (cancelled 3x!)
Good EC’s (NHS, theater, jobs, community service, social justice, no sports)

Is there any chance that JMU will offer in person tours or admitted student days in April? Everything is virtual now but does anyone see this changing?

D put Hart School of Hospitality on her application but no mention of school or major in her acceptance letter. Why is that?

We did an in-person tour in mid-November. I think they may start them up, but with the new semester starting, they probably want to limit the number of people on campus. I’m not hopefully for an in-person admitted student day, but keep checking their website because when they released the dates in November they filled quickly!

Emailed them today and was told Honors College Decisions will be released next week.

Unlike other schools, JMU has generalized admissions policy and freely allows major changes.

Wondering if your son has felt a bit out of place at JMU being from the northeast? My daughter has been accepted and it’s her first choice but has been hearing (idk from who exactly) that about 70% of kids are from VA and not many of the 30% from Jersey. She’s starting to reconsider.

chiming in, i think that jersey is heavily represented at jmu considering it is a state school so i honestly wouldn’t be too worried about that

NJ is the 2nd most represented state at JMU, behind VA. The northeast is very well represented.

Thanks I agree.

We know kids from NJ at JMU, They like it but all have commented on how southern it is and lacking in diversity compared to what they are used to in NJ. A couple of kids encountered evangelical Christian roommates and it wasn’t a comfortable match for kids from our interfaith super diverse Hs but they made do and like the school.

He def doesn’t feel out of place. There are enough NJ kids to know someone who knows someone from home, but not so many that he feels like it’s high school 201 :relaxed:

Thanks for the info. Good to know when looking for a roommates.

@NJgirlmom FYI, there are at least 100 freshman from New England every year as well. Every person I’ve spoken to from the Northeast that decided to attend JMU has loved it.

This is interesting! When did you fill out the General Application for scholarships? My daughter completed that on Tues. but we did not receive a follow up email.
