JMU NPC results vs package with scholarships

Thanks so much for sharing that info @md2384 ! I suspect my DD20 will be making her decision in late April now that we know that not all scholarships are offered at the time of acceptance. Not looking forward to that!

Did anyone do the NPC at JMU from OOS? Was it correct or even close? Now I am wondering if my OOS S2 should even apply if they are not giving out a lot of scholarships/aid/merit to some of the stats listed here. I can also call FA there but just wondering…

Our npc was $0

Zero aid/scholarships on NPC?

@Cheeringsection …yes npc $0 and initial financial aid info (released in March, I think) was also $0. $5000 scholarship email was yesterday. I suspect enrollment is not where they would like this close to may 1.

JMU missed out on getting my S. Nice college, but stingy. Even when we were there, they said they are not known for scholarship money and to start looking elsewhere for local scholarships. He got into the Honors College without a cent thrown his way. Much later in the process, they sent out a $5K merit scholarship, but by then (early April?) we had all but taken it off the list. They couldn’t compare with packages from other schools. Too bad. It’s a nice place.

Congratulations to your DC! Sorry that it is not enough. Maybe a call to them with what is enough, if he truly wants to go there, would help?

So…this is no joke, but S just got another scholarship from JMU! I’m not sure if they are stackable, but I don’t see why they would give him an additional $5K if it wasn’t stackable with the other $5K they gave him earlier this month. Wow! If they had just sent that along with acceptance letter…

Most kids we know already committed to schools. I don’t understand how they do things at JMU. Seems a bit screwy! Enrollment must be down.

@Propinquity4444 when we were there for a tour in March they talked about wanting to really grow their STEM majors, especially engineering. Is that what your DS applied for? Also, JMU has more female students so maybe they really want him to come help with getting them closer to gender balanced.

@Cheeringsection Not STEM. Music. But these weren’t talent scholarships. They were merit. We liked the school, but got turned off when they offered nothing, and moved on. He’s going to University of Miami.

Congratulations to your DS on U of Miami! Hopefully, JMU will get things out a bit sooner next year. Thanks for the info!

@Propinquity4444 Just reading your old post about JMU’s Johnny-come-lately merit award. This is even more incredible considering that JMU accepted 1,000 more students than it can accommodate! People are furious.

By “accommodate”
I am guessing you mean housing. Will there be forced triples or some other solution?

@1stTimeThruMom - where did you learn about that number?

@OrangeFish @Cheeringsection @Propinquity4444 My mistake. The over-acceptances are at VATECH, not JMU. Discussion of It is all over DCUM (DCUrbanMom).

Thanks @1stTimeThruMom – I had heard about the VT situation already. I’m glad the situation is at only one Virginia state school!

It will be interesting to see how the VA Tech situation turns out - half of my son’s friends are going there next year. Maybe they will all be in the same dorm room!

I haven’t heard anything about over-enrollment (or under-enrollment) at JMU, where my son is headed. Now if I could just get him to complete the 12 things he needs to do to sign up for orientation. . . .

JMU is definitely not very generous with scholarships, but I’m not sure that many regional public universities are. I thought my son might get a token something or other, but it’s fine. At least they froze in-state tuition for next year.

@1stTimeThruMom My son filled out a survey and mentioned that the merit money came too late since he had already heard back from other colleges and knew what they were giving way before JMU got their act together. He did receive an email back saying that they were sorry to hear that and that they felt the money came in a timely manner. Alrighty then…with that answer I think next year’s class should be prepared to wait until the bitter end!

@Propinquity4444 Glad he took the time to take the survey. Good luck to him with his studies!

not sure what went on this year with JMU’s music program but from observation, in our final youth symphony orchestra concert, they list graduating seniors going on to music majors. There are always several going to JMU and this year there were several going to VCU and Virginia Tech. Not sure what deal was this JMU music this year?
