JMU student to UVA transfer

Hi! I'm currently a JMU freshman and I applied to UVA as a transfer next semester and got in. After this spring semester and having visited UVA and witnessing the workload they have, I am doubting if I should transfer. I've come to really like the atmosphere here at JMU, very laidback and have an artsy culture(macrock...etc.) that I don't think uva has. But I highly doubt the commitment most students have towards their academics here that's why I actually wanted to transfer because I think I'd have more career options graduating from UVA. Am I wrong on this? I really want to hear people's opinions on both schools academic wise and atmosphere wise. Hope you guys could help. Thanks.

what’s your major?

I got in the Urban and Environmental Planning program at UVa.
I was initially going to be an Anthropology major with a minor in International Affairs and Art at JMU…

Planning seemed like a perfect fit for me when I saw the program at UVa…

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side… The work load at UVA is very similiar to here at JMU (at least for a biology major). I transferred to UVA my sophomore year after quitting a sports team (the whole reason I went to JMU). I spent one semester at UVA and transferred back to JMU. I have a 3.73 here at JMU and I had a 3.71 at UVA so very similiar I believe in grading. I like it here a lot better. UVA for grad school.

Daughter felt the same way you do, booretch and was looking to transfer to WM as the students seem more into the academics. She too, thought JMU peers weren’t quite as serious as she. She too, later wondered, does she really want her college experience constantly uptight on studying and grades. My personal opinion, as a parent, freshman year must be a bit tough on the students that are ready to fall into great academic rigor as many of the kids are so excited to be in college and away from mom and dad, and partying/social life is a big focus. I would bet by sophomore year, much of this attitude dies off and focus changes to academics. Sounds like you might want to give JMU another semester and see what changes. Good luck.

Can I ask what you decided on. I’m a bit hesitant on going to JMU because I’m not sure how rigorous it will be
