JMU's Art Department

Is there anyone out there who knows what JMU's Art department is like. I know it's rather small, but beyond that, I know little.

I'm trying to do comparisons among Art Departments of different Universities in VA, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting information on JMU's (besides the stuff on their website).

Anyone know anything?

Oh darn I forgot my question mark after the first sentence…punctuation fail. That’s probably why I have no responses. >>

I teach in the School of Theatre & Dance at JMU. Both are in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at JMU.

I have had the opportunity to work with faculty in the School of Art and Art History, see student work, and meet students in the art programs. The program seems to be very strong. What area would you like to study? Are you a studio artist? Art Historian?

Students at JMU who are interested in curating, have the opportunity to curate student shows. Lots of hands on experience.

Are you able to come and visit JMU? Visiting schools and meeting students can really help get a sense of the different programs.

I have visited actually, not long ago. I only got to go on the standard tour though. There were few students about, as it was finals week and most were tucked away somewhere studying.

I’m actually considering studio art (possibly concentration in graphic design), and I’m looking for a program with really strong lower level (freshman and sophomore) classes that help develop skills, as I, unfortunately, have never had the opportunity to take formal art classes.

I’m really interested in working with a large variety of art mediums. Have you seen lots of different art media used in student work? Paint, Graphite, Clay, Pastel, Charcoal, Digital, Photography? I would love to have the opportunity to get acquainted with as many different art mediums as possible. So far, I’ve been limited to mostly graphite and photography.

The curating sounds really interesting as well. Art History is also something I’ve been looking into. Thanks for the information. :)

I have seen students working in many different mediums, and the graphic design dept. looks very strong.

Thank you very much. JMU is my top choice, so I really like getting as much info as possible.

Since you have visited campus you probably are already aware that a portfolio review is not required for incoming freshman, but is recommended… AND is the way that incoming freshman may be considered for scholarships.
Go to the JMU Art and Art History website for more information.

Yes, I’d looked that up and am planning on attending one. =3 Um, how large is the art department? Can you give me a rough estimate? Really Small? Average sized?

As in, compared to other majors? I know things like business are pretty big, but I’m not sure about the size of the art department.

I am not sure how many majors are in the School of Art and Art History. There are many different areas of specialty, and there is a graduate program. I would guess somewhere between 300 and 400 in the school? I know they are bigger than the School of Theatre and Dance, which has close to 200 majors without graduate students.

I am sure if you contact the department directly they can give you an accurate estimate.

Ah, okay. That’s what I was looking for. I don’t need an exact number, just an estimate. =) I don’t want a program that’s so big I’ll never be able to get a proper grasp on it.

I think that because there are so many different concentrations within the School of Art & Art History there is lots of individual attention.

That sounds awesome. Yeah, I saw there were several concentrations listed. I’ll probably start out in Studio Art because it seems to cover a lot of mediums, and then I’ll choose my concentration if I find a specific medium I really like to work with.
