liberal arts???

DD has been admitted EA. When we visited JMU this fall, we found that the presentation and tour emphasized only the business and technology majors. Almost NOTHING about liberal arts.

I'm not sure about the fit for my daughter.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the History, English, and Art departments?

The Art Department isn't going to be emphasized at JMU..It's all about Business..if she wants history headd to UMW if you want arts head to VCU and if you want english DON'T GO TO TECH!!!!! haha

I have heard some comments from my son about the English department being good. I did not really inquire more about it. It is not all about business. Their psychology, biology, nursing, speech therapy (not the correct name of this major btw), and music majors/departments seem to be good from what I have heard.

I would def. go to the business school at JMU...or music

Pats..............hey, and how about our Patriots!! Anyway, don't be talking smack about VT. You know Virginia Tech is a great school. What does Charlottesville have to do with your opinion............I mean really, other than the schools are sports rivals......but that's hardly worth slamming the school now is it? Tech has really moved up the ladder as far as selectivity in the last few years.

So much of this is a matter of opinion. Sort of like the William and Mary/UVA thing. Both great schools, but I think they appeal to different students.

Why would anyone consider Mary Washington and JMU at the same time. Polar opposites in just about every way.

Where is come from in Virginia, JMU doesn't have such a great rep. It's always condiered somebody's second choice. Don't know why. My sibling goes there...........wasn't the first choice though.

Enough of the Tech trash talking now. Tech's is on board.

Peace Out.

Pedsox

where I come from in Virginia My spelling notoriously sucks all over CC. Everyone knows it!!!

I teach in Theatre & Dance at JMU and I believe that the liberal arts majors are strong. I interact with mostly Music, Theatre, Communications, Media Arts and Design, Art, and Dance students, and the many students from Computer Science, Business, English, Education, Art and other majors who take Theatre classes and participate in Theatre productions.

It is interesting -- but because I primarily interact with students who are interested in the arts, I have a perception of JMU as being very arts friendly, with strong arts programing (if I do say so myself :)).

-- There are something like 12 a cappella singing groups on campus that are student directed. Many of the members are business, technology, and other majors... of course music, theatre, art, etc... students are also members of these groups. Non-arts majors also participate in faculty directed choirs and productions on campus.

I am not sure what you Ds interests are or long term goals -- but I know in terms of Music and Theatre many of our graduates go on to professional careers in the performing arts and top performing arts graduate programs.

Just last month ground was broken for the New Performing Arts Center that is slated to be completed in 2010. We also have a recently formed College of Visual and Performing Arts, which is in the final stages of a search for a new Dean.

I suggest that you D visit, try to sit in on some classes and talk with current students to get a sense if she thinks JMU would be a good fit.

Feel free to PM me with any additional questions.

Congratulations on EA acceptance.
