If I have a regular job of 16 hours a week from all of Junior Year and all of Senior Year, how will that affect the way top colleges view my other EC's? They are decent, but not spectacular. Mainly a crapload of community service (800+ hours at least), a sports team, and Eagle Scout.

As in- Will they hold me to the same criteria as someone who doesn't work any jobs?

well...i don't know about you...but 15 hours during the school week is a LOT. I personally had a 5 hour job during junior year, then increased it to 10 hrs after college apps were (mostly) done. It doesn't take that much time to affect schoolwork-but it will take away from EC hours.

A word of advice: Don't push the 30 hour limit (which my friend did, after seeing how much her regular paycheck went up each time she took on more hours)...you'll likely suffer problems in school

mowmow721,
You will not be penalized in any way for this. Holding a job for a length of time is an admirable trait. I believe that holding a job as a server in a nursing home is even more admirable. This will take the place of other EC's, and surpass many EC's that your classmates have.

LOL. i work 30 hrs/wk and thats not really even that hard. 5 hours a week to me islike :why even work?

throughout my junior year and then this year i have been working over night shifts on the weekend (5pm to 5 am on friday and saturday) and then a couple weeknights. do you think it matters that i didn't notify them of the insanity of my job? i just put down 38hrs/week which is what i work...

working 38hrs is so good in itself so i doubt it would affect your case too much. That would have been good to enter a job description as well to show the adcoms how hard you work, but i think youre good in that regard either way.

Well, most of that 800 hours of community service comes from 5 mission trips for Katrina Disaster Relief...so it's not like I'm doing everything at once, LOL.

what if you're part of an internship program and you work for part of the year...but the program is all year?...would that be worth mentioning under jobs? You get paid for the part of the year you work...
