Jobs for students on campus

At the risk of sounding like a task master, I wanted to ask you guys how D2 might score a departmental job if not in her freshman year maybe her soph. year? I was thinking of something that would not only fill a few hours during the week but actually look good on the resume.

For example, I think Mom2 mentioned that her math major son is tutoring math for a part-time job?? Something like this I think would be great. D2 is going into psych and CBHP so maybe she could work as a lab assistant or something? I know some of the senior psych students do this type of work as part of their senior classes and project, but I was just wondering if there were possibilites for a fresh/soph student?

It does’t have to be a lot of hours but D2 is more productive if she stays busy.

Also, would there be any summer work opportunities on campus? Thanks so much.

Bikedad

I don’t know of about summer work, since my kids have never pursued that.

My kids work as tutors at the campus Center for Teaching & Learning (app is online).

As for paid lab assts… My kids often get emails from profs offering paid positions for research or whatever. And, I’ve known some kids to just ask their profs for opportunities.

BTW…if you D takes Honors Philosophy Deductive Logic and does well, she’ll likely be asked to be a TA for 2 semesters. The first semester the kids are given 400 level credit. The second semester the kids get paid.

Thanks for the feedback Mom2. Is that Logic class under math or philosophy? Just wondering because D2 is going to minor in Math/Stats to go along with psych and that would be a good fit for her.

It’s under Philosophy…but it fulfills a Core and an honors req’t.

It’s also an awesome class to help kids THINK. My son said that it really helped his logic skills.

Take it from Torin Alter or Chase Wrenn. I don’t recommend ever taking a class by Stuart Rachels. His dad (James) was a biggie in the Philosophy world, but the son is a bit of a #$%^&*

Rachels may be fine for research/writing, but his people skills are atrocious. He is a top ranked chess player though.

Torin Alter is very nice and very smart.

Chase Wrenn is good, but a bit quirky…but that’s ok. Some profs are just quirky!
