Is it common for students to work a part-time job? I’m trying to convince my parents that I could help to offset the extra costs of going to school out of state and to do so, I’d have to work. Thanks!

I could not have afforded to attend AU without working part-time during the school year (and full-time during the summer) every year.

I did not know a lot of other students who also had part-time jobs; most who did had work-study jobs at AU. But I did know a few like me.

The career center at AU has job postings for current students. That’s how I found mine. And it was a plum job–tutoring/hanging out with a Sidwell Friends student after school for a total of about 10 hours a week. I also had a part-time job at the university, and during my senior year worked in the billing/accounting department for a group of doctors based down Massachusetts Avenue from AU.

My D has had a couple of regular babysitting jobs found through the AU online job board–nearby Chevy Chase (one subway stop away) is an affluent community with lots of young families, and the the pay has been excellent. I’ve seen many students working in the shops and restaurants in Tenleytown. The only difficulty may be finding a work schedule that’s compatible with your classes.
