Jobs

My S will be attending DU next fall. We are very excited, and think it will be a great school for him. We got good FA, since we are not well-off, but no work study (which I actually see as an advantage, since he can still work and either reduce his loans or have more cash for weekend activities, incidentals, etc.). He has worked throughout high school and would like to continue with a part-time job in college. He's good at time management and likes to have spending money, also he feels he has learned a lot from his job experiences.

So I'm wondering what kind of jobs are available, what the pay ranges are, etc. for non-WS jobs around DU. He is a trained lifeguard, and has great IT skills and experience. Is it likely that he could find something at about 10-12 hours/week at first, in one of these areas? Is there a student employment office or other centralized listing place (I guess it's all online nowadays)?

Curious to know if most on-campus jobs for freshmen are filled by now, or if most put in for the jobs once they get to school? My daughter did not get work study as part of her package, but would like to work on campus to get some spending money. Ideas? thoughts?

I don’t understand - how could they be filled? The freshmen won’t even be arriving for months. Is it expected that they will apply/interview/etc. from afar (or are there enough local students to take a good portion of the jobs)?

My experience from my UG days (many, many moons ago) was that there were always some jobs available, more were posted at the beginning of the year but you basically just stopped in the employment office periodically and checked the board, and you could find something. Is it still that way?

I have work study, and I’ve applied for a lot of jobs online. They’re posted through webcentral and they seem to update the listings most weekdays. I’m from California but I’ve had several phone interviews, and the job I actually got, I communicated with the employer exclusively through email.

I think DU does on-campus jobs by requiring kids with work study to have their jobs by a certain date (October 15, I think) and then the remaining jobs are open to anyone? I’m not sure if I misinterpreted that though… it was a little unclear. Still, it seems like most of the on-campus jobs get taken by work study, and pretty early on.
