what are the options in terms of jobs or profit-garnering activities that a student could do to get some spare cash?

The financial aid website has information about work-study jobs on campus ( http://www.wesleyan.edu/finaid/employment/ ), which can be pretty sweet. There are also a ton of jobs you don't need to be on work-study for... you just have to dig around a little more. :P There is a real-life board with some advertisements... there are also some advertisements occasionally in the Argus... and Main Street is really close, if you want to have some job in town.

Ever considered doing research?
That's what I'm doing for work-study, and beyond.
That's if I go to wes. Yet, I find myself gravitating closer and closer to it everyday :-)

My D found that if you don't get work-study, jobs are very hard to find. She cleaned dishes in the cafeteria and for a while was able to do a non-work-study job in a campus office, but those are very rare.

what kind of non work study job was that in the campus office? and does anyone know what other non work study jobs are available?

People have been known to work off-campus; there's some demand for sales help and cashiers; you'll need a car and a good rap in order to get past the whole "You're overqualified and will be gone in six months" broadbrush.

There are a surprising number of jobs that you don't need to be work-study for... but they don't list them all in one easy place, so it seems like they don't exist. I know people who make a ton of money teaching at the local synogogue on Sundays, and you can make some money doing layout for the Argus, and you could work at KidCity... you might get a tutoring job... like I said... it just takes some digging around, depending on what you're interested in and what your qualifications are. (edit: but yeah, it definitely is more difficult than if you're on work-study. It's unfortunate that the government isn't willing to support anyone who wants to try to work and pay for their education tuitition...)

So other than office jobs or research, there are other things that anyone can do (regardless of work-study) to earn extra cash. One is the Red & Black Callers -- their job is to call up alumni, chat them up, and ask for money. They get a base wage plus commissions, and can end up making a LOT. The second thing like this (which Mad mentioned) is doing layout at the Argus. You get paid based on how many pages you do and their complexity, but it comes out to be a pretty good deal. Third thing is modeling for the art classes. It often requires being naked, but it's the best-paying job on campus, so a lot of people really don't mind.

In terms of off-campus work, in addition to working on Main Street (there are lots of little stores, coffee shops, and TONS of restaurants, so the opportunities are pretty good) there's also Neon Deli, which is a funky little deli/convenience store across the street from the fitness center. They basically ONLY hire Wesleyan students, so that's another employment opportunity. And you definitely do NOT need a car to work in town or at Neon.

I'm sure there are other things of which I'm not yet aware, but that's what I came up with for now.
