As Carnegie Mellon is RIDCULOUSLY expensive, what do people do around there for extra income? I am going to feel bad having to ask my parents for cash all of the time, and I would like to be able to have a job. Is it possible? What do your friends or others you know do?

I was shopping on Walnut St. and I went into Banana Republic and what do you know, an asian kid from my math rescitation was working there.

I think it is pretty easy to get jobs either on or off campus. I worked in the admissions office and several of my friends have work in the library or at the door of the dorms.

PS: If CMU is ridiculously expensive, what are the other top 25's, cheap?

Compared to my full ride to the University of Florida's Honors Program, CMU is infinitley more expensive.

Well I said "other top 25s" :)

Okay here is what I recommend you do.

Get an job (preferably on campus, but work study is only around 5k while off-campus jobs may pay better).

During the summer, get an intern/research position. My friend got one for 6k but that is research. For business/work you can probably get more.

Do your work and charge lazy people for tutoring. There is also a peer tutoring thing if you want to sign up for that (they pay you for that).

There are always rich kids around (like me) who will pay people for chores like laundry and going to Entropy to pick me up a carton of milk or some food.

Ask social retards for loans and then don't pay them back. They will be too shy and socially retarded to approach you for their money back.

acceptedalready.. #4 and #5 suck.

seriously.. you're going to turn off people from cmu.

lol please don't do 5, that's mean! the rest are good though

I think responsibility falls to the individual to get their money back. I mean seriously, if you don't take that kind of initiative, you will fail eventually the real world regardless of college-age bullying.

But yeah, it's definitley a crappy thing to do. I am going to be REALLY desperate for cash though, so anything goes short of actually stealing. :)

Obviously #5 is a joke; lighten up.

4 is a real college experience which can make you some money in the short-term. My going rate for food is 5 bucks and laundry is around 20.

nysweetie1287: I'm glad :) If people don't have a sense of humor I really don't want them to come.

My dad is an army officer, so I'm not gonna have the luxury of bartering with classmates haha

EDIT: Well, unless I'm getting your laundry for you AcceptedAlready.

Haha you'll see once you attend (any college). There's always money flowing around.

You play poker? You can make a couple hundred real fast from some good poker playing. Maybe get a book or read some online articles on that during the summer :)

Ah. excellent.

Oh, question: As part of my FinAid package there is work study. About how many hours does this consume? It doesn't make much money for a two-semester period so I'm guessing only a few hours a week? I'd probably end up with another job then too.

Oh it differs depends on what job you do. Try to get the jobs where you are stationary (like the doors at the dorms) so you can just sit there and do homework.

There are TONS of jobs on CMUs campus becuase there are also plenty of wealthier students who choose not to use their workstudy (AcceptedAlready comes to mind.....). The MINIMUM wage on campus for a freshman is $6, but I've never been paid that, so you should be ok. Most are for around $7, though some are for $6.50. There are job fairs at the beginning of the year. You can get a desk job, but you can also do stuff like computer repair for Computing Services that would be useful for you later. If you wanna know how many hours you'll be working, divide your work study by 7....I'd recommend about 7-10 hours a week. Its enough to get a decent amount of money, but not too much to interfere with school.

how do you get a job on campus? and when/where do you sign up?

Are these jobs available for MCS students as well? I need money.. hah.
Are there bookstores/diners around campus willing to hire inexperienced freshman? (Meaning=I've never had a job before and need one.)

and yes Rice at # 17 is def. MUCh cheaper
