John and Abigail Adams Scholarship / UMASS

Hello -

Does anybody know what the “value” is of this particular scholarship? While we understand that it is based on MCAS performance, and is renewable, we are not sure of what it’s actual impact will be for our daughter’s COA this fall. The UMASS site describes it as a “tuition credit” – I can’t tell what part of tuition it actually covers. We are a full-pay family.

Thanks, all!

This should cover what you’re looking for. For anyone who received the Koplik scholarship these numbers also apply.

This year it was worth $1,714 ($857 per semester). My daughter is a senior now and it’s been the same all four years.

It’s a nice award in name mostly - the way UMASS structures its cost - tuition is a very small percentage and the rest are other expenses and fees, so while this scholarship covers’ tuitio’n (under $2,000 as mentioned above) the remaining cost to attend UMASS Amherst instate will still be substantial - including room and board its just about $30k.

@myjanda Until recently any “tuition” that UMass collected went directly to the sate’s general fund. UMass did not keep it. That’s why you have that high “Educational fees” which UMass keeps.

thanks @TomSrOfBoston - I didn’t know that was why. Both my daughters got the scholarship - which is nice for their egos - but once we saw how little of the cost it covered we realized that for us and most of the people we know it really wouldn’t be much of a factor in our kids’ decision making.

Very helpful to know - thanks, everyone, for clarifying.

Yep. About $1,700. A help but not life changing.

Koplik is the same. But it’s confusing because many places that discuss it still refer to it as “full tuition”. This is no longer the case as UMASS has now brought tuition up (and reduced fees) so that tuition is the lion’s share of the cost, but kept Koplik and Adams where they were before this change.

this confirms what people are saying… it shows the value of the tuition credit
