I am a freshman at John Carroll University (JCU). I just finished my first semester with a 3.9 GPA. I applied to go to Case originally Early Action, but got deferred at each step before being denied. I plan on being a Molecular Biology major. Is it worth transferring? Or should I stick it out at John Carroll?

Case is much better for anyone in biomed engineering or any other engineering major. Biology is O.K. Do you feel that you’ll do better at John Carroll? If you’re pursuing med school, GPA is usually #1 consideration, not the school that you come from. If you believe that you can succeed at case, it may be better for you to transfer. If you have doubts, then reconsider your decision.

I don’t know if i want to go to med school or not, I might want to pursue a graduate degree in genetics instead. Another factor is that JCU has given me an amazing scholarship. I’m really so confused about what to do, I like JCU but I still feel strongly about CWRU. I don’t know if I feel like I want to rectify not getting accepted initially or that I really need to make the switch, it’s a tough decision for me to make.

Why don’t you stick it out for the whole year, and think about transferring a bit later? Talk with your professors and the career center at JCU and find out where their graduates end up. You could be pleasantly surprised!

I go to Case and think JCU is a good school. In the long run your Case degree will go farther in terms of reputation and prestige. It’ll pay off.

BUT, if you’re planning on med school or grad school, look into JCU placements. If students there get into top notch med schools then consider staying on campus and saving the money. Ultimately people will only look at the med/grad school you go to and not your undergrad.

I’d recommend Case because I think it’s a win-win. But if you’re confident you can do well with grad school admissions with JCU, then you might as well save the money.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I’m doing very well here. JCU placement is very good - a lot of people go on to become doctors and attend here. Will going to a smaller school like John Carroll eliminate me from attending good grad schools (Washington university in Sf. Louis has a great genetics program)?
