Do you think that Maryland students have an advantage getting accepted at Johns Hopkins or Georgetown U.?
Thanks!!

*Johns Hopkins (Sorry, it’s a pet peeve! haha)

I’m not sure if there is any advantage to be gained from being a Maryland resident applying to Johns Hopkins; you can always look up the geographic distribution of the student body and determine what percentage of undergrads are from maryland. Ultimately, Johns Hopkins is a good school and so I believe that regardless of where you’re from, it’s still going to be hard to get in. The same goes for Georgetown.

No, there is no advantage.

If anything, I’d expect Marylanders to be at something of a disadvantage applying to those universities. Because they’re close to home, they’re probably inundated with applications from Maryland.

Have you considered moving to New Mexico, or one of the Dakotas?

Applicants are not at a disadvantage if they apply from a state where we get a lot of applications from (NY, NJ, CA, etc.). Also applicants from a state we get few applications from (HI, AK, ND, SD, etc.) are not at an advantage. This is one of the great myths of college admissions. Students are admitted on the merits of their applications in relation to what we as the Admissions Committee determine makes the best fit for the University.

For Johns Hopkins.
