Johns Hopkins ED? Will chance back

Basics: White male, suburban, Jewish
School: Very large, pretty competitive (8-12 Ivies per year) public school in suburban NJ (2200 students)
Rank: School doesn't rank but I'm probably about the 85th percentile
GPA: School goes on 0-100 scale, currently 95.3 W
Probable major: Poli Sci

SAT: March '09- 2040 (680 CR/740 M/620 W, 8 essay)
May '09- 2210 (750 CR/660 M/800 W, 9 essay)
Superscore is 2290 (750 CR/740 M/800 W, 9 essay)

SAT II: June '09; Lit: 730, Math I: 710

EC: 130 hours at a local retirement home...2 years on school newspaper staff...3 years on undefeated conference champion Quiz Bowl team

Work: Umpire for local youth baseball league...counselor in training at overnight camp

AP: 5 on English Lang...school doesn't offer any APs to sophomores and very few to juniors

Senior schedule: AP English Lit, AP Psych, AP Macro, AP US Gov, Pre-Calc, Culinary Arts

Summers: Summer before junior year at overnight camp as counselor in training...summer before senior year at BU High School Honors Program taking 2 classes for credit

Other: NMS Commended Student
Journalism Student of the Year for my school as a sophomore

-anticipating great recs from English and History teachers
-good rec from head of volunteers at the retirement home
-good counselor rec
-great essay

Legacies: Uncle graduated from Johns Hopkins Phi Beta Kappa

For the BU summer program I earned a B in Religion and Culture and a B+ in Intro to Poli Sci...with BU's notorious grade deflation I'd say this would look good for my application.

Overall, what are my chances for Hopkins ED?

Can you elaborate more on the grading scale? does 95/100 mean you average 95% on all your classes?

i’m thinking like 80% chance but you’re sat ii scores arent as good as your other scores but i dont think that will have a big impact so you have a pretty good chance (:

you can chance me too! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/792948-chance-me-priority-nyu.html</a></p>

The grading scale is a 0-100 scale…my average for all classes since freshman year is a 95.3 weighted…classes are given a weight based on difficulty.

bumppppppp

bump again.

another shameless bump

76% chance in.

Yeah, thats right. I’m frickin precise.

hahaha nice

anyone else have a guess? i’ll chance back :)

I think you have a decent chance. Does John Hopkins superscore?

It looks good but how many APs are offered to juniors and how many did you take? not sure how much johns hopkins sets by schedule difficulty but ap’s are usually good indicators…
With the uncle, even better. Looks good.
Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/795683-yale_scea-chances-thanks.html</a></p>

You’re showing a fair amount of interest in political sciences, which is a good thing. You’re within the middle 50th percentile for SAT on all sections (and above in writing), which is also good. Alumni relatives just sweeten the deal. The GPA isn’t bad (maybe something like a B+ UW?). The only thing that seems to be holding you back a little is your weakness in math (SAT 2 score and Precalc senior year–unless that’s the furthest your school goes), but I don’t think it’ll really hurt you considering your major. Overall, I’d say your chances look pretty good.
Try me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/795732-low-gpa-good-everything-else-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

@xshadow: Yes, Hopkins is superscore.
@Northcountry: My school offers only 3 APs to juniors (Chem, USH and English Lang.)…I took English Lang. and got a 5
@shinhanbag: My school offers AP Calc and Stat, so yeah math isn’t exactly my strong suit. But as you said, I’m not sure it matters if I’m majoring in Poli Sci.

Anyone else?

bump
bump
bump

The legacy will help. You seem like a pretty standard JHU applicant. You don’t really have anything that makes you stand out (besides the legacy) so I’d consider it a high match/reach. Good luck!

How did you get 800’s in the writing section with 9’s on the essay…?

bump bump bump
