Yeah, so I am a A/B Student, my GPA is around a 3.7 UW. I'm in the top 5% of my class at a large public high school in Florida!

SAT 1 - 2250 (700 CR, 750 M, 800 W)
SAT 2 - 760 Bio, 740 US History.

Cool, now for EC's. I have debate, of course. Lots of awards, won a few national tournaments and have qualified to very prestigious debate tournaments, where I have done EXTREMELY well. Debate is basically my life and I do hold a strong leadership position in it.

I also run a blog and have wrote for the local newspaper, writing is a big 'passion' of mine. But seriously, I love writing and am VERY interested in the writing seminar at Hopkins (#1 reason I'm applying). I went to a writing summer camp in L.A. to learn about the evolution of journalism and the problems currently wrong with the industry as well as creative methods on fixing it. Most of my writings are satirical pieces, similar to the great Daily Show and Colbert Report. I really want to be a writer for a TV show when I 'grow up'.

Lastly, I am involved in NHS. In fact, I (just recently!) became the Vice President! I love doing it, and earned a TEDx license and created a TED event at the school sponsored by NHS. It went really well and the faculty loved it!

Oh, and because it's sadly relevant for admissions: I am a South Asian with a mom currently in Medical School and a dad currently in a PA school. Yup both my parents are in college right now.

I probably sound like a idiot and/or douche. I apologize in advanced for any mistakes I made. I just really want to know if I am in the range for Hopkins ED. And if I am, what do you think could hold me back? Thanks so much!

GPA might pull your down a bit. Other than that, your EC’s, SAT’s are excellent, you should apply to more competitive colleges as you stand a good chance. However, If you believe that John Hopkins is your best fit, it seems like a match. Good luck!

Your extracurricular activities are two weak. You spend time on them, but they are only NHS, Debate and writing.

To SternTurn, Hopkins is absolutely my fit and I simply love it. <3

Yes, wannabefeynman, I have just 3 extracurriculars. I have done smaller, less meaningful things however. I competed in the Science Fair, but only went up to districts both times. I also did Track and Field, but quit after sophomore year. I spent an entire summer learning how to code and design apps, but failed miserably. I don’t know if I should include those things, because I obviously suck at them. The last thing I want Hopkins to think is that I just do extracurricular activities for the sake of getting into a good college. What do you think?

And how competitive is the ED pool @ Hopkins? I know the acceptance rate is relatively high, but are the applicants stronger than the RD pool?

You have a shot! If you’ve own circuit tournaments for debate like wake, Harvard (not because Danny always does:/ ), sunvit, etc. then make sure that shows up on the app. Include quals to nationals (NFL OR CFL) or states and include placement at states.

All in all I know debate is really time consuming but you need more ECs for places like Johns Hopkins unless you’re gone every weekend for debate. If so, explain that in an essay or something. Also look into debate scholarships at schools, I know emory and wake have some. Emory is incredibly competitive for it. For wake, I don’t know exactly how they work I just know that I was recommended and got one so maybe email wake debate and ask about it!

As far as JHU goes. I think you have a shot. But it’s a low reach. Are you published? In a newspaper? Book? Anything? That’s a big hook and could help you!

Best luck!!!

<a href=“DUKE ED CHANCES - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1643813-duke-ed-chances-p1.html</a></p>

Again, I love what Hopkins has to offer. But do you think that feeling would be mutual? Johns Hopkins is known as a science school, and although I like taking classes like Biology and Environmental Science, I don’t like most math classes (Geometry is the only the exception for me) and select science classes (I hated chemistry and avoided physics). I love taking English (favorite class!) and courses like Psychology, Anatomy, and Economics. It’s a bit random, I know.

Do you think someone like me will be a good fit at Hopkins? Someone who loves to read and write and debate about economics and technology with a strong liking of the humanities and select science courses? Thanks.

If you go ED you will probably make it through - they’re big on demonstrated interest and you have the academics/achievement in the ECs that you have. What others suggest about having only a handful of activities applies somewhat but you have enough probably for JHU and it is evident that there is meaningful involvement in what you do have. I would btw still include science fair and track but obviously lower in the ranking of significance. Don’t worry much about not being interested as much in science - i don’t think this would be a significant factor.

It seems as though you are concerned about fit but you’ll have to make sure there’s no doubt by the time you apply. I would try asking JHU students (maybe post in the JHU forum) because I don’t think someone who hasn’t been there can give you a good answer.
