I want to go to Johns Hopkins University and major in Biomedical Engineering, however I am concern that I will not get in, and if I do I won't be able to afford it. Any advice on what I should do?

All you can do is apply and see what kind of financial aid is offered. Perhaps it will be do-able for you.

Well in regards to not being able to afford it JHU has great financial aid and because of it’s smaller school size and larger endowment, they are able to provide for their applicant’s needs. If you’d like an estimate on how much need based aid you can get go here: [JHU Possible Aid Estimator](<a href=“Student Financial Support | Johns Hopkins University”>Student Financial Support | Johns Hopkins University) There you will find a worksheet that will basically calculate how much they will give you in need. Too be fair JHU and OU are not exactly the same stature of school. I’m sure you will be able to find a lot of higher paying job opportunities coming out of JHU than you would OU so the degree might pay for itself.

Now in regards to whether of not you’ll get in. Try. You never know. And even then don’t let it be just JHU or OU. You should have at least 5 schools you apply to. And OU can easily be your safety. There are many more affordable schools around the country that have Biomed Eng programs that outrank OU and can give you great scholarships and fin aid. Like the University of Wash and CSWR. Check to see what other schools are there. Don’t settle for a school because it’s cheap.

To major in biomedical engineering at OU, you’d have to major in ChE, ME, or IE with a track or option in biosciences. Also, the medical campus is in Oklahoma City, some 20 miles away from the main campus.

Consider U Minnesota, which has a strong bioengineering program and is one of the less expensive public flagships for out-of-state students. UMN has strong health sciences programs as well. Minneapolis also is the home of several companies that make biomedical devices, so it offers some advantages for internships and hiring.

*and if I do I won’t be able to afford it. Any advice on what I should do? *

Why are those your only 2 choices?

Is your goal med school?

What are your stats?

Are you a likely NMF?

Oh my!

*Objective:

* SAT I (breakdown): 2400 (single sitting)

- Gender: Male
- Income Bracket: ~$110k
- Hooks: URM SAT

*

You need to also apply to all the schools that give super aid…like Stanford and HYP.

Do you know how much your family will pay?

You will get accepted to probably every elite that you apply to.

That’s a big “if” given the gross mismatch between GPA and scores. If there is a good reason for the GPA that can be articulated by the GC, then I would expect great results for an URM with those scores, ECs, and awards. But I’m puzzled by the timing. 1st semester senior year grades are in, but he hasn’t applied anywhere yet? Planning on a gap year?

His grades may keep him from being named a NMF. Don’t know what the GPA guidelines are for NA.

For some reason, I misread his GPA as a 3.7…instead of 3.1.

However, I don’t know how much leeway they will give a male AA with a 2400 SAT…I don’t know the exact numbers of how many male AA’s have a perfect 2400 with one sitting, but I think the numbers are very low. And, his SATIIs (all of them! wow) are amazing.

I think schools may think that he found school too easy/bored…and busied himself with other things.

All in all, he’s still in the top 20% for his school, so it doesn’t sound like his school engages in a bunch of grade inflation. The top 20% at many schools is like a 3.6 or higher.

That’s unfair, misleading and perpetuates stereotypes about the weight of being Afr American. I certainly agree this young man could be well served to shoot for other elite schools beyond JHU, but let’s not give false hope that “he will get accepted to every elite.”

It amuses me when kids do this. When I was in school, they wouldn’t tell me my grades until I had, you know, taken the tests and done the assignments and stuff.

But, seriously, I regret to say I agree that the mismatch between your standardized test scores and your GPA will reduce your chances at elite colleges and universities–not reduce them to zero, but reduce them nevertheless. Write that essay about your GPA very well, and hope for the best. But it’s also a good idea to look for some other colleges and universities that live in the space between JHU and OU.

It won’t be a problem to make NM finalist --nephew did with a 3.0 (even got the $2500 scholarship, and my son is a NMF with a much higher GPA but didn’t get the $2500 so go figure ;). Work to perfect the application essay this next fall. Even with the lower GPA, I think you have a good chance of getting into some very selective schools. You won’t know until the apps/, but I think JHU is a possibility here.

If you make NMF, then there are other schools to target for merit aid that you can search the threads on later to determine where you will focus. Full ride to Alabama, Tulane? U Southern CA offers half off tuition for NMF, bringing total cost to $30,000 with room and board included. That’s a steal for USC. U of AZ also offers full rides. Anyway, keep this in mind for next fall. When you get the application materials there is a huge list of schools to research for amount of awards offered. You will be choosing your “first choice School” on application in fall, but have one other opportunity to change that school the following spring (April deadline). There are tons of threads on NMF schools and all the strategies to getting a full ride or almost full ride. Good luck! I have no doubts about you. Nephew had a 3.0 and is on a full ride at Ohio University for pre law. He’s saving all kinds of money for law school and has earned a 4.0 for past two years…he’s a man on a mission :)

I have a hunch that he is lying about his stats and is the person formerly known as “wesley108.” He disappeared from HSL for a few months and I think he has come back with a new account. Wesley108 posted these “Dream stats”:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12077150-post7.html. Exactly the same profile as ZombieDante claims to have.

*It won’t be a problem to make NM finalist --nephew did with a 3.0 *

I wouldn’t say that it won’t be a problem…go back to the NMF threads and you’ll see some kids/parents posting their disappointment that their 3.2 or so kept them from making NMF.

*That’s unfair, misleading and perpetuates stereotypes about the weight of being Afr American. I certainly agree this young man could be well served to shoot for other elite schools beyond JHU, but let’s not give false hope that “he will get accepted to every elite.” *

First…I corrected myself in a later post because I thought he had a 3.7.

Secondly…YES…a male AA with a single sitting 2400, a high GPA, and his good ECs would likely get accepted to all elites he applied to.

Thirdly…as the wife of a doctor PG, you may also know that the same would work for med school apps. In the med school forum here…a Male AA posted that he had like a 35 MCAT and a high GPA, and he asked about safeties…the veteran posters there who know the workings of med school admissions assured him that he didn’t have to worry about safeties that much…and that he should feel free to apply to all the top 20 med schools (and that he’d likely be accepted.)
