I am a current High school senior and am undergoing a huge conflict in choosing a future college. Just to give you guys some background, I am Salutatorian for my school, absolutely love classical music (I play the violin), I am a first-generation college student, and enjoy research, dancing, and volunteering.
Johns Hopkins has admitted with an undergraduate research fellowship that provides $10,000 (one time) to fund an independent research project. With this, I could start planning an independent research project as a freshman and possibly have an article published by the time I graduate as an undergrad.
However, I have been in love with Duke since freshman year (Due to to its campus, location, extra-curriculars, and excellent pre-med program), and the though of actually being admitted seemed absolutely unrealistic. I am so grateful.
The thought of saying no to Duke breaks my heart, but rejecting an undergraduate research fellowship at Hopkins does the same!
Thus, I was wondering if you guys could please help me with making a final decision.
Are any of you guys current pre-med students at either school? What school do you guys think would provide me with the best opportunities/ chances of being admitted to a relatively good medical school and be well prepared? How do GPA’s and MCAT’s compare? Is it hard to go into research and possibly get published at Duke?
My counselors and teachers say Hopkins is the better choice, but I simply can’t choose.

Either school will have opportunities.
Neither school will improve your chances of getting into med school.
All US med schools are excellent. It’s an honor to be accepted to any of them.

Are you asking about the GPAs and MCAT scores of all premeds during their 4 years?
Or the stats of their successful med school applicants. If that info is available, it’s going to be on their websites.
Net cost after financial aid/scholarships [folks, please put this in your first post.]
As for pre-med… they are both very highly regarded feeder schools into medical schools… I highly doubt one would be better than the other in that regard.
Both schools would challenge you academically and you would get a stellar education that would prepare you for any medical school to which you will be qualified to attend. The biggest difference to me of the two schools would be the social atmosphere. Did you attend an admitted students day or have an overnight at either school? Have you been looking forward to ‘traditional’ social scene that division 1 sports provide ? The ‘rah rah’ weekends? Every college, from the smallest liberal arts school to the behemoth university offers many ways to be involved, make friends and have fun. What’s your definition of ‘fun’? You did say in your opening comment that research opportunities are important to you and Hopkins has given you a grant…sounds like they spent some time on your application to see what turns you on and how to entice you to attend . What’s the first thing you see when you go to Hopkin’s website- it’s pretty much all about their commitment and passion for research. Is that the most important element of your university experience? Certainly Duke has research opportunities, though you may need to put forth more effort to arrange. Call Duke and discuss. That sounds like it’s the sticking point in your decision. Congratulations and best of luck!
both are ranked high- congrats for getting in
i heard JHU was depressing and full of cuthroat students
