Johns Hopkins vs UC Berkeley

Hello, everyone!

I am a student who wishes to enter into the emerging field of neuroprosthetics (a precursor to bionics). The field is brand new, still evolving, and contains a hefty amount of both biological and computer science / robotics aspects, sort of like Biomechatronics at MIT.

I was wondering which university might be best suited to such pursuits. I have been trying to decide between UC-Berkeley and JHU. Cost and distance from home are not an issue for me. I like the smaller student environments but it seems like JHU is mediocre in robotics/computer science, and Berkeley is no champion in biomedical engineering, but I can only choose between these two...

So help please?

JHU BME is extremely renowned and their engineering departments overall are quite good (EE and BME are top top top). I think JHU makes a lot of sense. I think research opportunities will be important to the development of your career and you should look to see where you can do better in that sense.

I think Berkeley has always been ranked in the top 10 for biomed engineering. It may not be number 1, but it is not something to ignore about, in terms of academic strength.

I’d go for Berkeley, but JHU would be a good choice, as well.

JHU.
