I received the Johnson as well!
Do other recipients have schools they are considering over W&L?
I can’t speak for anyone individually, but I know the school gives about about twice as many Johnsons as they anticipate on having in the incoming class.
I’m choosing between W&L and UAB and leaning pretty heavily towards UAB
@amanda19 May I ask why not W&L if you don’t mind? My DS is trying to choose among three of his top choices, SMU (President Scholar = full ride), W&L (full ride+) and Vanderbilt (has to pay about $5,000 per year more than SMU (books+travel+health insurance+misc.). It is a very tough choice and any input would be appreciated!
@coolmom3 As someone not interested in Greek life or partying I don’t know if W&L would be the right fit for me, as well as lexingtons size and lack of diversity. I have tuition and housing at UAB and after considering travel costs to W&L I’d probably end up paying about the same amount either place. Right now I’m just mulling over the extra 7,000 for summer things…
@amanda19 Thank you so much for your response, my son’s reservations are exactly the same (lack of diversity and size) although he said that he might join one of the “nerdy” fraternities since their interests seem similar to his (he visited them while he was there). He’s not into parties either and he doesn’t drink. I still believe that there are kids who fit this description at W&L and he’ll have a wonderful experience there. Also, he is very interested in study abroad and Johnson would afford him this opportunity! Our state flagship would be a free ride too but as ironic as it sounds, as a professional working in the field of public education, I wouldn’t recommend a public education option over a private one for my son (just my personal opinion).
@coolmom3 What state are you in, if you don’t mind me asking? UAB is not our states flagship school and is relatively small. It is a fantastic research university that is ranked #1 in the nation for research dollars for incoming freshman among public schools and has the best hospitals in the state available for internships. I would be in a special liberal arts honors program but have all of the benefits or a research university. I had always wanted to go to a private school but once my first choice didn’t work out financially I realized all the opportunities UAB would give me.
@amanda19 I sent you a PM
