Is it possible to join the UCSD basketball team without any high school team experience?

I'm becoming a freshman this fall, and I always wanted to play "official" basketball. I moved schools too much to join a high school team, sadly.

I've been playing since I was 5 years old though and I still play every day for hours for fun (pick up games or just practicing). I got serious when I started playing with friends in LA who were on the team. They won state that year.

So is it possible? Is it likely? If so, how does the whole process work? I guess if I can't do it, then intramural would be the next best thing, but its not the same as reppin' SD on the real team!

EDIT: And sadly, I'm only 5'8-5'9. I can "almost" dunk, I just need an inch or two more vertical to get the ball over the rim.. :(

Biggest factor whether you can even join any team is how familiar you are learning and running plays–something you get a lot of experience with in HS and other organized teams.

As far as I know - they scout high school players for the most part. I know several people who were top on their high school teams and were invited to try out before school started - none of them ended up making it. I’m pretty sure there is an additional tryout during the year but it’s realllllly hard to make it.

Good news is, there’s always intramural basketball! You should look into that.

e-mail the coach to ask when walk-on tryouts are going to be held. ask when, where, and what he expects from you as a basketball player (physically)
