I'm from Brazil, and I've always loved to play basketball. I've been named the school's MVP all my 4 high school years, I was once in my league's all-star team and once named league's MVP (a small league consisting of the larger American high schools in Brazil). Nonetheless, I know that I'M NOT EVEN CLOSE of being able to sit on Duke's bench. I have two questions:

how are the intramural tournaments? Fun, competitive?
can a student try out for duke's basketball team, or is it something restricted to scouted players? (in case I somehow manage to improve absurdly)

They do have try-outs for walk-ons. Also, there's both Club Basketball and intramural basketball. Intramural has different levels of competitiveness, so I'm certain you'll find your niche.

From all I've about the walk-ons since I've been here, they contacted the basketball office directly. There's not going to be fliers around campus for varsity basketball tryouts, so if you're thinking about being a walk-on you should try to get in contact with the coaches. I don't know if there'll be many/any walk-on spots next year, though. We lost McRoberts and a walk-on, Pagliuca, and we're getting 3 (possibly 4) scholarship players next year. Worth a shot though.

There is no men's club team. How tall are you? Were you recruited by anyone else. Honestly you'll find plenty of people who played high school basketball and even some graduate students who played college basketball. If you really want to get dunked on, play in one of the Durham basketball leagues.
