Hi everyone, so I’m currently in my Firth year of my studies. I’ve been in college since Fall 2014. I transferred to a four year university in Fall 2017 and since then I’m finally on path of graduating in Spring 2021. I’m considering applying to the BS/MA in math during my second semester junior year. Spring 2020 and my advisor is helping me with the process. I was wondering how does financial aid works. They told me that I could take up to 12 credits of grad classes and pay them as undergrad tuition
My only concern is that I don’t qualify anymore from FASFA. Can I still apply for fasfa if do BS/MA program? My parents had to take out loans to pay housing and meal plan.
Until you get your degree, you are still an undergrad and get FA under those programs. You can run into limits under those federal programs, state programs, and the school’s own FA. Some are limited in the number of semesters, the number of credits, or actual calendar limits.
My nephew did the joint program. He finished all his undergrad work but his school did not issue his diploma so that he could continue on the undergrad rate and still qualify for the state subsidy (up to 150 credits). When he finished the MA, they gave him both diplomas. If at any time he’d decided not to finish the MA, he could have picked up his BS diploma.
@twoinanddone thank you. I’m currently at 123 credits now. I’m not sure how much I will have after this semester. However, I was wondering there is a limit of how many credits you can have.
Yes, as I said the state program my nephew was under was 150 credits. My daughter’s state merit program ended at 120 credits, and she needed 131 for her undergrad degree! She had a limit of 8 semesters for her merit award. Pell grants have a limit of 6 years of full time, so you have to calculate all the partial terms.
If your 123 credits include some from hs, those may not count against you. You need to talk to the FA people at your school to get the answers.
