Journalism after Duke?

I'm interested in Duke, but I'm concerned about post-grad prospects. I'd like to go in to political journalism, either broadcast or writing for the NYT, WSJ, or Weekly Standard. I would double major in econ and public policy or political science. I'm just not sure how much success Duke grads have seen in these fields, or how "wired" the university is in establishing the connections.

I'm also looking at UChicago, which seems to have some success in this career path, but the grade deflation there raises concerns over grad school.

I'd also like to go further away from home than Duke. Is there a disadvantage to not living in the city in terms of opportunities?

Here are some prominent Duke alumni in journalism: [List of Duke University people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“List of Duke University people - Wikipedia”>List of Duke University people - Wikipedia). Such alumni include Judy Woodruff and Charlie Rose. So, no, I doubt going to Duke will hurt your future career prospects… it will only help you out. Anyway, you don’t have to major in journalism during undergrad to be a journalist; you should have figured that out by that 2008 thread you dug up.

I feel like somewhere near DC/ Tri-State would be better, but it probably has to do more with your own ambition to break into political journalism than the school itself.

Duke will prepare you well. Schools like Georgetown and Northwestern seem like good fits for you too
