Hi, I’m a Junior in high school and I know I want to double major with journalism, but I’m not sure if Political Science or Sociology would be better. I’m just trying to make a plan for when I’m applying to and looking at different colleges. I find both Political Science and Sociology very interesting, but I don’t know how the majors hold up when looking for a job. If I become a journalist I want to be international with a focus on current issues, either or both humanitarian and political. Which would be a better double major?
Journalism is a very tough field right now and opportunities to work abroad are few, and usually only after working in the field for quite some time. Still, if that’s your dream international relations would be a better choice. A language could be even better.
Southoftheriver, thank you for the information, I am planning on taking Spanish throughout college for sure, maybe another language as well or instead. I’m currently taking both Spanish and German in high school and I will get some college credit for my German classes, although I think Spanish might be more useful in the long run. As for an international relations major I honestly wasn’t aware that that major existed, thank you for telling me about it. I can see how it would work really well with what I want to do but wouldn’t political science and/or sociology cover some of the same material? I’ve just heard really good things about pairing those two majors with Journalism.
Double major is a good idea because you won’t be writing about journalism. International affairs focuses on world issues whereas poly sci is US focused. Make sure to study abroad for as long as possible.
You really don’t have to worry about it for maybe 3 years. That choice isn’t likely something that would have a larger impact on school selection. It isn’t like you are picking between Nursing and Agricultural Engineering.
