What lacs have journalism as a major? What are some of the bigger, more competitive schools that also have journalism?
thanks.

First, keep in mind that it is not absolutely necessary to major in journalism in order to become a journalist. A degree in any subject at a college that emphasizes writing, research, and analytical skills can serve just as well.

Second, pay attention to the differences between programs. At some schools, there is a "communications" major which focuses on the more theoretical aspects of communication. At others, the focus is on developing journalistic skills (i.e., reporting, writing, editing). So, look closely at the differences between programs because there are literally hundreds of schools offering some variation of communications/journalism.

In terms of LAC's, two with communications/journalism degree programs are Muhlenberg and Gettysburg. There are also a number of other smaller universities with programs.

A helpful resource for anyone considering majoring in journalism is the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. About 110 programs have received ACEJMC accreditation, which requires a certain level of competency in journalism education. The list of accredited schools is a good place to start in terms of finding potential schools: ACEJMC-accredited programs

In general, however, here are the universities mentioned most often as being "top" journalism programs (no particular order, and this does not in any way imply that there aren't other great schools out there as well): Northwestern, U of Southern California, Syracuse, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Maryland-College Park, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Again, there are many, many schools for journalism and some schools have programs that are just as good as the above schools. Focus on finding schools that offer skills-based classes taught by teachers who have actually worked as a journalist, that offer solid internship opportunities, and that have up-to-date facilities for broadcasting, print production, etc. It is also a good idea to take a close look at the student media being produced on campus. And, again, don't forget that it isn't absolutely necessary to major in journalism to end up as a journalist. Good luck!
