Journalism: Yes or no?

Hi All,

I was wondering as a sophomore, I got accepted to be part of my school’s journalism class but I’m not sure if I should take two sciences or take one science and journalism. I plan on majoring in science BTW

You might change your mind between now and college on what you want to major in. Most college students change their major a few times, and colleges know this. You aren’t going to be evaluated based on your intended major unless it is to a super competitive program like engineering or nursing. And even that will depend on the schools you apply to.

Take the class you think you will enjoy the most, don’t worry about how colleges will view your sophomore year schedule.

I agree with the idea of taking what you want. But I don’t agree with the idea that students change their major as if it is a whim. Students who have a longstanding interest in science are unlikely to all of a sudden prefer English lit. Yes students change their majors and some who start out in science don’t do well and do switch but often to an allied major rather than something completely previously off the radar. This student is simply stating a broad category of interest-science- and I bet the student ends up in some sort of science.

If you got accepted to the class, that implies that you applied, which implies that at one point you wanted to do it. Go for it if you still want to.

Thank you for everyone who answered! To clarify bodangle’s answer: I did apply because I wanted to get in, but my schedule makes it so that either I take one science and journalism or two sciences and no journalism. I took bio freshman year and am taking chemistry now, but in the future I want to take AP Bio and Honors Chem, which I can take both next year if I don’t do the journalism class (which btw is the school newspaper). I wasn’t going to get a major position anyways so i don’t know if its the good choice. And also lostaccount you were right about the major thing

You don’t need two sciences in one year.

It’s better to take Honors Chem before AP Bio and there’s no need to take two sciences junior year. Take the journalism class, especially since you had to apply to get in!

"But I don’t agree with the idea that students change their major as if it is a whim. Students who have a longstanding interest in science are unlikely to all of a sudden prefer English lit. "

No one said students change their majors on a whim. It’s possible to have long-standing interests in both science and humanities and to want to test interests in a number of areas before settling on one (or more). My D started as an engineer and ended up a philosophy major (with comp sci as a minor). Not on a whim…after a long and difficult decision process.

OP, go with the journalism. It’ll be a good experience and as others have said, you don’t need two sciences in one year.
