Hey, I was wondering if any USC students could provide information about the print journalism major? Is it easy to balance working for the paper, keep up grades, and still have a social life? Pros? Cons? Anything would be appreciated!

yeah I'm wondering the same.. any current USC Annenberg students?

I'm a sophomore majoring in Broadcast Journalism, but the print students I know seem to really enjoy their major and have plenty of time for a social life. The journalism curriculum can be very strenuous and time-consuming, but it is quite possible to keep up good grades if you put in effort.

Remember that about 2/3 of your overall USC credits will come from outside of the Annenberg program, so it can be challenging to keep up with other classes when there are looming deadlines for in-class or newspaper stories.

yeah I applied to the broadcast program...
Ned5555 - would you mind telling a little of that experience?
and if you wouldn't mind, maybe giving a little background info on yourself so I can have a general idea of where I stand?
I heard the program is VERY VERY competitive?

I think the broadcast program here is great. You are surrounded by students who are passionate about journalism and the faculty are incredibly experienced. For example, the professor for my Broadcast Writing class last term is also the producer for the local NBC 11 o'clock news. My professor for Print Writing used to be the Op-Ed page editor at the Los Angeles Times.

Outside of class, I've been working with Annenberg TV News, which airs a 30 minute newscast four nights a week. That's been a great chance to practice writing and editing video, all in a real newsroom environment using industry-standard software.

The school can be competitive to get into, especially if you are a girl. I think that around 75% of Annenberg students are female.

I had been co-editor of my high school newspaper for two years and done summer programs in video and documentary film. A demonstrated interest in journalism is crucial when applying. Here are some stats about this year's freshman class:

thanks for the info!
Are there many internship opportunities for students in this field in LA?

There are plenty of internship opportunities year round, especially if you want something related to entertainment. You can actually sign up to receive a "Jobs and Internships of the Day" e-mail put out by the Career Development office. There are dozens of listings per week, though many are professional positions not open to students.

My sense is that mostly juniors and seniors do internships during the semester, and a car definitely helps if the place is far away. You can also do internships back in your hometown over the summer, and the career office can help arrange that as well.

I wonder what the Daily Trojan will be like this semester, especially because our elected editor-in-chief was ousted by the admin and we had to hold another election.

Working at the DT is pretty flexible; if you're on the staff you can choose how many hours you want to work and what days. As a staff writer, though, I'm not sure; if you're a beat writer you have to generate a lot of your own leads, and for goodness' sake, if you're assigned a story remember to turn it in on time so that you can go over it with your section editors who will subsequently love you forever. I copy-edit there, so if you're interested in that I can tell you more.

Yes, I am definitely interested to hear anything about the paper. I am torn between USC and UCLA, but am leaning toward USC because of its journalism and screenwriting programs. Thanks for the link!

I know this is an old thread, but I would love to hear about anyone’s perspectives on USC’s print journalism program, as I’m currently deciding whether or not I should choose USC over NYU or BU if I’m pursuing journalism.

Is the program reputable ? Will it help me when I start looking for jobs?

Do many students acquire internships ? ( more specifically at magazine publications, as that’s where I want to get into)

How’s working on the Daily Trojan? stressful? flexible?

How’s the curriculum in terms of difficulty?

any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated. =]

thanks!
